“Shoganai” is a Japanese word for “it can’t be helped.” Parking is non existent in some cases causing you to miss certain places until you think outside the box. We finally made it to Tea Room Mountain. It was a great experience. I hope you can check it out.

The Gem You Always Drive By: 1,200 Yen Fugu on the River

Parking at Tea Room Mountain might be practically non-existent, but as they say in Japan—shouganai! After a short walk from the nearby store, we snagged a seat by the open window, listened to acoustic guitar, and enjoyed the breeze off the Imazu River. 

The 1,200 yen lunch special hit the spot: cream gratin doria paired with deep-fried puffer fish (fugu karaage), rice, soup, and sides. Plentiful, delicious, and cash-only.

1998 vs. 2026: Same girl, better wardrobe. 📸✨
Back in 1998, as a transitioning U.S. Navy veteran and working-class student, I owned exactly one nice button-down shirt. San Diego, Los Angeles, Tokyo—if we were going out or taking a photo, that plaid shirt was on duty.

I knew I was punching way above my weight class, and I kept waiting for the run to be over.

28 years later, we’re still exploring Japan together. I’ve updated the closet, but I got to keep the girl.

Taking a drive west down the Sanyo Expressway from MCAS Iwakuni to Hofu City. Built in 904 AD, Hofu Tenmangu is known as the very first shrine in Japan dedicated to the deity of academics and scholarship.

It’s Monday morning here in Japan, but I’m watching a Sunday game live from Brazil, while it’s late Sunday afternoon back home in the U.S.
With the NFL expanding to a record 9 games across 7 different countries this season—Australia, Brazil, the UK, France, Spain, Germany, and Mexico—the game is truly becoming global.
International time zones are wild—eating tomorrow’s breakfast while watching yesterday’s football halfway across the world. 🌎⏱️
