The JNR Class C57 135 is a famous Japanese steam locomotive built in 1940.

Today, it is preserved and displayed at the Railway Museum in Saitama City, Japan.

📝 Locomotive History

Built: May 1940 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Service life: Ran roughly 3.25 million kilometers (equal to 81 trips around the earth) across Honshu and Hokkaido.

Final run: Pulled the historic last regular steam passenger service (Train 225) from Muroran to Iwamizawa on December 14, 1975.

Retirement: Officially retired in March 1976 and initially housed in Tokyo's Kanda Transportation Museum before moving to the Railway Museum in Omiya.

Ekiben (eki-ben) are boxed meals sold at train stations and on trains in Japan. The word combines "eki" (station) and "bento" (lunch box).

We bought the "Shinkansen-designed ekiben", these are novelty train-station lunchboxes shaped like Japanese bullet trains.

They feature popular models, packed with kid-friendly foods like chicken rice, sausages, and fried chicken, and serve as reusable souvenirs after you finish eating.

🚆 The Railway Museum in Japan 🚉

36 different rolling stock are on display, from Locomotive No. 1, the first locomotive to run when Japan opened its first railway in 1872, to the Shinkansen, which boasted the world's fastest cutting edge technology.

Golden Torii Gates of Hoshiimo Shrine.

It honors the region's famous dried sweet potatoes (hoshiimo) and plays on the Japanese phrase for getting everything you desire (hoshii mono).

Built in 2019 on the grounds of Horide Shrine located in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Horide Shrine and Hoshiimo Shrine are on a hill with a beautiful view of Ajigaura Beach.

In 2019, Hoshiimo Shrine was newly built on the grounds of Horide Shrine. Ibaraki Prefecture ranks the highest in production volume for hoshi-imo (dried sweet potatoes) in Japan.

Hoshiimo Shrine features beautiful golden torii gates lined up in two rows, making it a popular photogenic spot.
