A Quiet Morning in Nara: Discovering Oyaki at Machiya Café

Arriving early in Nara gave us the perfect excuse to wander into a charming café housed in a traditional machiya. An elderly woman welcomed us with a gentle warmth that made the space feel instantly comforting.

We chose the Okihiru set, which came with a selection of oyaki, delicate, flavorful, and reminiscent of a larger, softer hopia. The quality, price, and thoughtful service made the experience feel special.

The café also offered local crafts and homemade cookies. I left with several packs (they were impossible to resist) and a beautifully woven pin as a small keepsake.

It was a serene, grounding breakfast before stepping into the lively world of Nara’s deer and the later rush of tourists.

For anyone visiting, this café is a lovely stop worth seeking out.
