Stretching 120 meters wide and dropping 20 meters into the basin, this waterfall is a highlight of the Oita Bungo-Ono Geopark🌈 Unlike many hidden falls, Harajiri sits right in the plains, making it incredibly accessible. You can walk across the 'Takimi Bridge' for a stunning head-on view, or stroll the promenade to stand right at the top of the falls. For the full experience, head down to the riverbank to feel the spray and hear the roar of the water! There is also a huge water spin you can spot when strolling around also seasonal flowers (( I missed the footage😅)).

✨ Tips: Cross the Takimi suspension bridge for the perfect photo, or walk right up to the edge at the top! If you’re lucky and the sun is out, you’ll catch a rainbow in the misty spray 🌈 don't jump or running when crossing the bridge.

Takachiho Gorge is home to the breathtaking Manai Falls, one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. Standing 17 meters high, this ethereal cascade drops right over the edge of the volcanic cliffs.  
I missed out on the rowing boat lottery this time, but the clifftop trail didn't disappoint. Walking the path along the edge gives you a bird’s-eye view of the sheer basalt columns and the rushing river below. A reminder that in Takachiho, beauty is everywhere you look—whether you’re on the water or high above it.

🚗 How to go here: Approximately 30-40 minutes walk from the Takachiho Bus Center. Direct buses from Kumamoto (approx. 3 hours) or Hakata Station (approx. 3 hours 45 minutes) are available. 
🍃 Best Time: Beautiful in all seasons, particularly in autumn (foliage).

today, May 5th, if you visit Japan will notice these iconic windblown streamers are called Koinobori, and they symbolize Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day).
In Japanese folklore, the carp is a symbol of strength, courage, and determination. Legend says that a carp that swims upstream and leaps over the "Dragon Gate" waterfall transforms into a powerful dragon. By flying these flags, parents wish for their children to grow up with that same resilient spirit.
If you look closely at a flagpole, you’ll see a specific order to the family:
🎏The Black Carp (Magoi): Representing the father, the largest and strongest at the top.
🎏The Red Carp (Higoi): Traditionally representing the mother (though sometimes the eldest son in older traditions).
🎏The Blue/Green/Pink Carp: These smaller streamers represent the children of the family.
