It’s been over a year since the release of Further Reading Print No.4, titled ‘Learning Within, Learning Without: Modes of Design Enquiry’. We are grateful for the warm enthusiasm and support we have received from our readers. After the first edition travelled to countless book fairs, discussions, and launch events, we are excited to share that the second edition is now in production. 📓

In this issue, we bring together creative practitioners from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds to reflect on learning, from structured pedagogical approaches to more personal and community-centred experiences, as well as industry-led forms of learning. While it began as a discourse on design education, the book has evolved to explore learning from a more all-encompassing perspective.

At its core, is a book about creative learning. It celebrates multiplicity and interdisciplinary practices that extend beyond the field of design, opening up broader conversations about how knowledge is formed and shared within the creative sphere. With the second edition on the way, we look forward to bringing these voices and perspectives back into circulation.

Stay tuned for updates on the reprint!

Further Reading Print No.4 is distributed internationally via Idea Books () for the rest of the world; Art Data () for the UK; Slow Burn Books () for Australia and New Zealand; or directly from us for Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia—as well as through our official .

Speaking of language and translations, we are reminded of Neutral Colors 5: Language (2024), which featured the Japanese translation of Aditya Bayu Perdana’s Tracing the Traditional Indonesian Scripts—an essay first published in Further Reading Print No.3: Down South, Outgazing Our Views (2021).

The essay was originally edited by Almer Mikhail and Januar Rianto, translated into Japanese by Yuma Wada, with photographs taken around Jakarta—from Glodok and Blok M to Jagakarsa—by Keita Noguchi in 2023.

The fifth issue of Neutral Colors takes language as its theme. Language, the editors claim, is a notion that cannot be communicated. In pursuit of a modern-day Rosetta Stone, the magazine is fully designed to express the essence of language through visual imagery and concepts. From tracing traditional Indonesian scripts, onomatopoeia, and the Japanese dance theatre known as butoh, to cephalopods and seeking a father’s language, this issue’s contents are as varied as the appearance of the magazine’s pages. Neutral Colors is an independent Japanese publication featuring vibrant offset and Risograph printing combined with a heavy duty saddle-stitched binding. (Excerpt from Temporary Unit)

It has been a learning experience to see essays published by us find new connections across cultures—or even expand their cultural meanings—through translation. It’s something we hope to continue doing more often. Moving forward, we are working on two new translated and adapted titles, set to be released next year. Stay tuned for both!

Further Reading Print No.4: Learning Within, Learning Without (Modes of Design Enquiry)

The fourth iteration looks into modes of learning not limited to pedagogical practices within formal design educational institutions, but also within communities and society at large. to spotlight self-organised, sporadic, spontaneous, and informal educational initiatives within the realm of creative practices. Though these initiatives are not limited to design as the sole discipline, they are crucial in informing design practice in general.

These initiatives are often catalysed by communities outside of the design world, such as artists, writers, researchers, academia, and others. From these convergences and intersectionalities, we observed how those initiatives gave way to the emergence of communities, discourses, artworks, objects, or even strategies.

Featuring contributions from Amanda Ariawan, Andriew Budiman, Carlos Romo-Melgar, Chabib Duto Hapsoro, Czar Kristoff J.P., Filippo Sciascia, Fiorent Fernisia, Gideon Kong, Jacob Lindgren, Jeremy Sharma, Keni K. —After a (not-so) brief absence, Further Reading Print is back for our fourth issue! 📓

Titled Learning Within, Learning Without: Modes of Design Enquiry, the issue focuses on the ‘gaps’ within the educational systems in place and the alternative methods which arise from different initiatives.

To accompany the release of Print No.2: Boundaries, multinational multi-genre group has created a mix featuring musicians with cross-national identities, sounds that challenge classification, and original work made across borders. The mix also explores what boundaries mean from the angle of differently-abled and gender non-binary artists featured within. Asa Tone is the collaboration between ambient and electronic musicians Melati Malay, Tristan Arp, and Kaazi, with roots in Indonesia, The United States, and Australia.
