Stepping into Mari Vanna in London is like being transported to a Russian babushka’s apartment. The decor is a cozy treasure trove of lace, old photographs, and shelves filled with traditional preserves, creating a feeling of dining in a home from a bygone era.

It was a true Russian feast, starting with a table full of zakuski (appetizers). We had traditional pirozhki (baked buns), tangy pickles, and a classic spread of dark rye bread with herring and salo.

No Russian meal is complete without the iconic Olivier salad, a New Year’s staple that dates back to the 1860s. For the main course, I had the classic Chicken Kiev, which was cooked perfectly, served with a layered potato side.

Finally, the desserts were legendary. We tried both the Medovik, a delicate multi-layered honey cake, and the Napoleon, an equally impressive creation of flaky pastry and custard cream. It was an incredible dive into traditional Russian hospitality and home cooking, right in the heart of Knightsbridge.
