Sakura season is here.

Nearly a year ago, I was walking around Kyoto in places the Philisopher’s Path, the quiet streets, and the river banks with a mochi in hand as the blossoms fluttered through the spring breeze.

It was so beautiful to finally experience it and I loved seeing the shared wonder others and locals felt as the trees bloomed.

4 days in Kyoto with some of Nara sprinkled in and it had its surprises from life-saving ramen to slightly aggressive deer.

But it’s the best feeling to reminisce on a trip and all the moments in between like these.

Excited to return here someday soon!

Kyoto felt overwhelming.

Narrow roads. Watching out for cars. Hard to relax into.

It just wasn’t what I expected.

But after 4 days of walking, turning down different streets, getting a little lost, it started to feel right.

Quiet little corners. Mochi by the riverbanks. Moments I almost missed.

Would 10/10 go back and wander again.

All that wandering was fueled by (still the best bagels I’ve ever had).

You’ll find stories everywhere you go.

A family welcomed their baby to the park for the first time! It was here that the couple would spend their weekends together when attending college many years ago.

A recent high school grad saw me with my camera and asked if I could take some photos of him. He added some flair with these dogs — they’re not even his dogs! A family passed by us during the shoot and he asked if he could borrow them for a photo 😂

There was a woman in the distance with dark clothes that stood out to me. I loved her look and asked if I could take a photo of her. I caught her off guard and she said “yes” but expressed she was a little shy sometimes with these things. It opened to a conversation with her sharing that she moved from Sweden 2 years ago to chase her dreams in becoming a musician!

Meeting people I would otherwise pass is what makes this craft special.

We all deal with struggles, confusion, and noise. I hope this helps to remove some of that distortion so you can think more clearly.

This video came from personal struggles.

It came from the advice I would give others that I struggled to follow myself. But most importantly, it came from talking with friends and family in the last few months who I’ve seen struggle as well.

In a time where there's a lot of distraction around us, this is a reminder that we all need a reset to balance ourselves.

As I get older, there’s one thing I don’t want to lose.

I remember waking up to snow days with schools canceled and the day being reserved for my brother and I chucking snow at each other and sitting by the fireplace with the crackling embers in front of us.

There was a sense of wonder and stillness during these times.

But in the last few years, I’d wake up and the rush of moving from one thing to the next made me see things as chores first.

The snow would look pretty for a couple minutes and then I’d have to clean it. It’s how I thought about a lot of things for a time.

At one point I caught myself thinking “wow is this just how I’m gonna think as I get older?”

I wanted to return to that sense of curiosity I had. Even if it was a fraction of it because I don’t lose my sense of wonder for the simple things.

And it gets harder as you get older. You have to be more conscious of it then because the daily life sweeps you up.

But staying curious and in wonder is where we pull the most value from life.

And that’s what makes living so exciting.
