Singapore Shoot – June 2026 | Day 6 🇸🇬🇯🇵

The main focus today was visiting the Yoshida Farm ( ) to cover their lotus root cultivation. They let us film them doing some tough work, like clearing weeds in the lotus ponds from early morning. Huge respect for all their hard labor!

Later, we moved to their farm stand to interview the couple together. For each question, we had them decide on the spot who would answer. And that led to an incredible breakthrough!

When interviewing in Japanese for international media, we often run into a big challenge: the tendency to omit subjects in Japanese conversation. For example, if you ask "What's your name?", most people just reply with their name rather than saying "My name is...". International media often prefers complete sentences.

I’ve been trying to solve this issue for years, and the solution suddenly hit me today! After discussing who would answer each question, they would naturally restart their sentence before speaking. Because of that pause, they unconsciously repeated part of the question and included the subject organically—saying things like, "The reason we started this farm was..."

With this amazing discovery in hand, we wrapped up the shoot, checked out of our hotel in Kashiwa, and headed back to Tokyo.

Singapore Shoot – June 2026 | Day 5 🇸🇬🇯🇵

Started the day with a 1-hour drive to Mito to visit Tengu Natto, a historic local natto producer. Huge thanks to President Sasanuma for his warm hospitality and candid insights into Japan’s current soybean import situation!

In the afternoon, we headed straight to Tsukubamirai City to interview "Yanagi no Sato," an agricultural cooperative corporation. It was a deeply insightful session hearing directly from the farmers about how they're tackling major industry challenges like an aging workforce and finding successors.

Singapore Shoot – June 2026 | Day 4 🇸🇬🇯🇵

Our destination this time was a local bento shop in Takasago, Tokyo. Despite rising rice prices and the increasing cost of living, the team there continues to support the local community with surprisingly affordable meals.

What impressed me most wasn’t just the prices, but the atmosphere. Everyone was cheerful, welcoming, and clearly proud of what they do. It was one of those places that reminds you how much small businesses mean to a neighborhood.

Later that night, at the crew’s request, we headed to an Ichiran in Kashiwa. I couldn’t believe how empty it was—meanwhile, the Shibuya branch can easily have a two-hour wait! Maybe everyone should start going to Kashiwa instead. 😂

Singapore Shoot – June 2026 | Day 3 🇸🇬🇯🇵

Visited a large-scale farm in Ryugasaki, Ibaraki.

The farm has expanded by taking over land from retiring farmers. Despite using AI and drones, they told us the real key to growing more rice is experience—knowing exactly when to sow and when to spray.

Learned a lot today!

Singapore Shoot – June 2026 | Day 2 🇸🇬🇯🇵

Our hotel for the night was in Kashiwa, Chiba…..yet somehow we found ourselves back in Tokyo for two interviews. 😅
That's documentary filmmaking for you—no matter how carefully you plan, the schedule always revolves around the availability of your contributors!

We had the privilege of speaking with the head of one of Japan's leading fisheries organizations, as well as the CEO of an innovative company tackling food loss.

A huge thank you to both of them for sharing such valuable insights.

Singapore Shoot – June 2026 | Day 1 🇸🇬🇯🇵

A Singaporean crew joined us for a week-long shoot across the Kanto region.

On our first day, we headed to Choshi Port in Chiba and spoke with a local fish wholesaler. As we had feared, the reality facing Japan’s fishing industry is a tough one.

Fish catches have fallen dramatically, some species have become smaller and scarcer, and many people working in the industry are struggling to stay afloat.

Maybe the first step is simple: eat more fish. 🐟

First Hanshin Tigers game of the season with my dad — and a win! 🐯⚾

Discovered a new perfect day-out combo:
Sauna → Baseball → Happiness.

Checked out the newly opened Everyday Sauna Tokyo before heading to ZOZO Marine Stadium, and honestly, it might be the ultimate route for a perfect day.

Absolutely refreshed and fully recharged.

My friend Glenn from my university days in the UK came to visit Japan from Norway, so we caught up over dinner in Tokyo!

Turns out it had been 13 years since we last met — felt seriously nostalgic.

Norway is way too expensive for me right now 😂 but once the weak yen finally calms down, I’ll definitely come visit!

Annual family mission at my parents’ place: firewood delivery complete.
Thanks to a certain someone, the house still runs on a wood stove — but at least we’re ready for winter now.
After hauling all that wood, I think I’ve earned a little sushi reward 🍣
