Beyond Fushimi Inari Taisha and Kyoto’s famous sights⛩️

It wouldn’t be a complete visit in Kyoto had we skipped its most famous spots and sights. So we started by visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, a sacred place that has become quite popular.

After this visit we continued our travels all the way to Uji, but not only for its matcha. The Byodo-in Temple is located here; yes, the temple depicted on the 100 yen coin.

Early in the morning we headed out to visit the Yasaka Pagoda and stroll around its surrounding streets. A place that is famous for a reason, and that you can’t miss during your visit in Kyoto.

We also found a hidden Bamboo Forest at the Kodaiji Temple, a place that we had all to ourselves, something that you can’t really experience in Arayishama. 🎋

And lastly, we followed recommendations from a local and ended up crawling through a hole inside a giant stone while visiting a hidden shrine. 👀

Eastern Kyoto⛩️

When most people think of Kyoto, they imagine temples, shrines, and traditional streets. And while Eastern Kyoto certainly has that, what made this day so special was the feeling of slowing down and simply exploring and taking in the moment.

Walking along the Philosopher’s Path, surrounded by nature, quite streets, and centuries of history, felt like stepping into a different pace of life. Along the way, we unexpectedly discovered the Otoyo Shrine, a charming hidden gem that is guarded by rat status, before continuing on to the beautiful Eikando Temple.

To end the day, we traded peaceful temple grounds for one of Kyoto’s most famous dining experiences: Kichi Kichi Omurice.

Amanohashidate & Ine 🗾🛖

Pedaling 32 kilometers on the other side of the world, with completely opposite traffic rules, following a route beside the crystal clear sea, was definitely one of the highlights of my whole visit to Japan.

Amanohashidate is a destination that although popular among the Japanese, many foreigners still don’t know about. Or, if they do, they just spend a day trip from Kyoto. But I am here to tell you it’s so worth it to at least spend a night at this location.

Only 16 kilometers north of Amanohashidate you will be able to visit Ine, an idyllic fishermen village. And trust me, you will not regret it.

Mount Koya ⛩️

Koyasan ⛩️

Some places are beautiful. Others are impossible to describe.

Koyasan was one of those places for me.

Walking through Okunoin, surrounded by centuries-old cedar trees, countless tombstones, and an almost unimaginable sense of peace, I found myself struggling to put into words what I was experiencing. There was an energy to this place unlike anywhere else I visited in Japan.

In it, I take you through the streets and temples of Koyasan, walk the sacred paths of Okunoin Cemetery, and show you what it was like spending the night in a Buddhist temple.

No photo or video can fully capture what it feels like to be there, but I hope these moments convey at least a small part of the tranquility and spirituality that make Koyasan so special.

A place I would return to in a heartbeat.
