Japan Is the Only Place in the World Where Spider-Man: Brand New Day Didn’t Dominate the Box Office 🤯

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its massive global run, Japan became the standout exception. In its second weekend there, Spidey dropped to No. 2, earning about ¥629 million ($4 million), while local animated hit Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island gained the top spot.

That contrast says a lot about Japan’s entertainment culture. Even one of Hollywood’s biggest superheroes can run into serious competition when he enters the home turf of a beloved domestic character.

Brand New Day has already passed $1.7 billion worldwide, so this is hardly a defeat overall.

Spider-Man took on the world. Japan sent Chiikawa. 😂

Rui Hachimura wasn’t even safe at his own event.

On August 8, Hachimura hosted a youth development camp at IG Arena, hoping to inspire the next generation. But the event took an ugly turn when he was subjected to racist insults from people in the crowd.

Later, a reporter asked him why he continues to represent Japan’s national team despite facing such treatment.

His answer was powerful:

“I take great pride in being Japanese. No matter what anyone says, I am Japanese. I was born in Japan, raised in Japan, and Japanese is my first language. Wherever I go, I can say with my chest out: I am Japanese.” — Rui Hachimura

In the face of racism, Hachimura chose pride. He stood tall and made it clear:
No insult can take away who he is.
