Taiwanese truck driver confirmed dead at Mt. Fuji

Around 2:00 PM on August 29th, a hiker near the 6th Station on the Gotemba Trail in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture, requested rescue assistance from nearby mountain hut staff, reporting that "a friend who was hiking with us suddenly collapsed."

According to the police, the man who collapsed was a 49-year-old Taiwanese truck driver who was hiking with four friends. The man was confirmed dead.

When the Gotemba Police Station’s Mountain Rescue Team arrived at the scene, the man was unconscious and in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest. At the time of the incident, heavy rain with strong winds was reported near the 6th Station.

Tropical Storm Shanshan has heavily disrupted traffic across much of Japan. Rail, airline and expressway operators are calling on people to check their websites for the latest information.

Central Japan Railway Company has announced that all services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line will be suspended between Tokyo Station and Shin-Osaka Station from the first train on Friday morning due to heavy rain.

The company said services will remain suspended between Mishima and Nagoya throughout Friday. It also said that if operations can safely resume on other sections, services between Tokyo and Mishima and between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka will be greatly reduced, with only about two Kodama local trains per hour. No through services to the Sanyo Shinkansen will be available.

The company said Tokaido Shinkansen services could also face suspensions or delays from Saturday through Monday.
