Kamogawa Sea World's 10-year-old walrus Shizuku is currently pregnant and due this season. This is her first pregnancy, and the second sired by the park's resident bull, Riku.

The birth will be the second of this season for Kamogawa, which saw the arrival of a bull calf to 18-year-old Mina on April 22nd.

Shizuku was born on April 6th, 2016 at the Otaru Aquarium — the fifth of six calves born to her parents, Uchio and Uurya. She was transferred to Kamogawa Sea World in 2020 to be paired with their young bull, Riku, upon reaching maturity.

Shizuku's birth was the very first ever reported on Walrus Network, and her pregnancy marks the unique milestone of the arrival of a second generation of walruses on WN's tenth anniversary, which we celebrated in March.

Kamogawa Sea World's 18-year-old walrus cow, Mina, delivered a male calf in April of 2026. The calf is Mina's fifth, from her fourth pregnancy, and he is the firstborn of his father, 13-year-old Riku.

This pup is the first to have been born at Kamogawa Sea World in the past six years — the longest interval since the facility's founding pair delivered their first offspring in 1994. The previous calf is his half-sister Nanoha, a young cow who was born to his mother Mina in 2020 and has lived at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi since their grand opening in 2023. Both individuals are the only surviving third-generation captive-bred walruses in the world.

The new bull calf brings Kamogawa's current herd up to four individuals; the pup and his parents, in addition to 10-year-old unrelated cow Shizuku.

I would like to share my sincere gratitude to @/404notfoundorca for graciously allowing me to share their images!

With the recent passing of SeaWorld Orlando's Slowpoke at 48 years of age, the title of oldest living walrus cow now belongs to 35-year-old Uchi of Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.

Uchi (alongside her lifelong herdmate, bull Seita) was captured on Wrangel Island as a calf in 1990, and imported into Japan by Izu-Mito Sea Paradise — there the pair of calves joined Izu-Mito's two 15-year-old bulls, Copen and Mush (who were the first of their species to live in Japan). Two years later the park imported three additional calves, two males and a female; though the males only lived 4 days and 6 months respectively, the female, Mohku, survived to join the park's collection of five walruses.

After nearly two and a half years at Izu-Mito, Uchi and Seita were transferred to Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise two weeks prior to the park's opening in 1993. Hakkeijima imported around five additional walruses in the years following, and currently houses five individuals in two herds. Uchi and Seita remain together in their Aqua Museum habitat — they were joined in 2019 by Piko, a female walrus who had previously been housed in another area of the park. In addition to this trio, the park also houses adult females Moko and Ako, who perform in the Aqua Theater. Sea Paradise, together with SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, currently houses the third largest collection of walruses in the world.

Though Uchi is currently the oldest living cow, she is the third oldest living walrus overall; preceding her are SeaWorld Orlando's 43-year-old Garfield, the longevity record-holder for bulls, and the Otaru Aquarium's 36-year-old bull, Uchio.

Hello everyone! I'm currently undertaking a bit of a "spring cleaning" on Walrus Network, making sure profiles on our website and in our records match up, and making corrections and updates along the way. A large amount of new profiles and information on historical walruses have been added to the site, with many more to come.

For our network members, now is the perfect time to browse the site and reach out with any missing information or errors you may see for any of the current or historical walruses and facilities. As a special request, I would also be very glad to receive any photos you may have of both exhibits and animals, particularly prior to the 2010s! These images will go towards our offline records, and will never be published without your express permission. Please contact me via email — [email protected] — or by direct message via any of Walrus Network's social media pages.

Included in this post is a photo of an Atlantic walrus calf, one of five captured alive in June of 1899 on a whaling voyage to Canada and kept aboard the ship "Esquimaux". The walruses were seemingly allowed free reign of the ship, with the vessel's owner, Andrew Barclay Walker, having said "They pay occasional visits to us in the saloon and our cabins, taking a look round to see if things are ship-shape before retiring". He recalls one walrus in particular being taken off the ship for a swim, and notes "She is very tame, and follows you in the water as you walk along the ice. She comes up on the ice when you call her". The young calves were fed a diet of oatmeal mixed with pea soup, and with the potential exception of one individual whose fate is unknown, none of the walruses lived more than 39 days.

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom's approximately 13-year-old walrus cow, Yaya, delivered a healthy female calf on March 20th, 2026. The facility stated that the pup, named Longni, broke the facility's record for fastest birth (3 hours) and fastest time to begin nursing (2 hours).

Longni is Yaya's second calf, and the fourth born at the facility since 2023. With her birth, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is currently believed to house 16 walruses, continuing their position as the world's largest exhibitor of the species.

Additional photos of the calf can be found in the comments below this post.

20/03/2026

Tierpark Hagenbeck's bull walrus, Odin, has passed away on March 19th, 2026, just shy of reaching 30 years of age. Odin passed while being anesthetized for a medical assessment due to an ongoing gastrointestinal condition which had been unresponsive to medication.

Born in 1996, Odin -- originally named "Odinnadtsatyy", meaning Eleventh -- was part of a herd of walrus calves captured for the Moscow Zoo that same year, followed in 1997 by an additional group, altogether totaling at least fourteen individuals. There, in 2008, he sired his first calf (and the first to have been born under human care in Russia), Olivia.

In 2013 the last remaining individuals of this large group -- Odin and females Polosa and Dyna, in addition to captive-born Olivia -- were transferred to Tierpark Hagenbeck, joining temporary resident Sgata-Neseyka in the park's newly built Eismeer habitat complex.

During his time at Hagenbeck, Odin sired six additional calves; Thor (conceived in Moscow and born at Hagenbeck in 2014), Loki, Snorre, Fiete, Floki, and his final 2022 calf, who passed together with its mother during a difficult delivery. Odin is survived by four of his calves -- Olivia, currently living at Dolfinarium Harderwijk, Thor and Floki at Pairi Daiza, and Fiete, who remains at Tierpark Hagenbeck. Odin was, at the time of his death, the only proven bull in Europe, and one of only two in the region's history.

My thoughts sincerely go out to all affected by this tremendous loss.

Ocean Park Hong Kong announced in early March of 2026 that their North Pole Encounter habitat complex — home to the park's pair of Pacific walruses, among other species — has closed for a renovation period. The space is expected to reopen as the Marine Mammal Conservation Center in the first quarter of 2027.

Thus far the park has made no announcements regarding whether or not the renovations will bring any changes to the zone's walrus habitat specifically; the resident duo, Rock and Miru, will remain in their exhibit's holding space during the construction phase of the project.

The highlight of the new Conservation Center will be the showcase and advancement of "Ocean Park’s capabilities in marine mammal research and rescue", with a strengthened focus on conservation and education.

Two walrus cows — 15-year-old Chouchou and 6-year-old Kora — were transferred from SeaWorld Orlando to SeaWorld San Diego in February of 2026. There they joined the park's resident bull, 32-year-old Dozer.

Born at Japan's Kamogawa Sea World in 2010, Chouchou first arrived at SeaWorld San Diego in 2016, and has lived there the majority of her life. This transfer marks her first return to the park since being integrated into Orlando's herd in 2024.

Kora was born at SeaWorld Orlando to their resident pair, Garfield and Kaboodle, in 2019. Though this is Kora's first transfer, her mother, Kaboodle, was born at the San Diego park in 2003, and lived there the first 8 years of her life.

Please join me in celebrating Walrus Network's 10th anniversary!

Founded as a photo blog in 2014, Walrus Network's current iteration launched on New Year's Day of 2016. The website went online two years later, on March 10th of 2018, finalizing my goal of making freely and publicly available an exhaustive database of the entire captive walrus population, both historical and current.

Walrus Network's launch year turned out to be a record-breaking one, seeing the births of seven calves from six pregnancies — numbers which have not been matched to this day. Since its inception, Walrus Network has seen the births of 33 calves, including historic firsts for nine parks and four countries.

Numerous statistical records have been broken within the captive walrus population since WN began;
• In 2018, SeaWorld Orlando's Slowpoke became the first walrus definitively known to have surpassed the age of 40 under human care. In 2022 she was joined by Garfield, the first — and thus far only — bull to have ever reached this milestone.
• In 2018 Kamogawa Sea World saw the birth of its 11th calf, thereby exceeding the record set by Marineland of the Pacific just over three decades after that facility's permanent closure.
• In 2021 walrus Uurya delivered a calf from her record-breaking sixth pregnancy — although other cows have matched or exceeded her for the number of calves produced due to twin births, no other walrus is currently known to have carried more than five pregnancies.

Significantly, 2018 also saw the final commercial captures of wild walrus pups for entertainment and public display — 130 years after such operations first began at scale.

Over the course of WN's existence, 20 new holders have begun displaying walruses, while only 11 of these are currently still housing the species — overall, walruses have phased out of the collections of 33 different facilities during WN's 10 years. There are currently 52 facilities housing walruses in 2026, down from a historical peak of around 60 in 2019.

The incredible milestone of our tenth anniversary would not be possible without the financial backing of our supporters;

Danielle S., Michael F., Typus Data, Gordon, Memaw, Nayer Y., Grant H., Gorillas Land, Hunter B., Shirley S., Beta S., Fat Walrus Brewery, Eva F., Stoehr S., Jason P., Adeline W., Dave & Carole P.

In addition to our many, many contributors over the years, the "network" of Walrus Network, to whom I am incredibly grateful! Thank you for these past ten years and for all the next!

22-year-old walrus cow Tanpopo returned to Ise Sea Paradise from her breeding loan to Minamichita Beach Land on February 25nd, 2026.

Minamichita confirmed that copulation between Tanpopo and their resident bull, Kikku, took place on February 17th and 19th. If successful, Tanpopo would be expected to give birth around May of 2027.

This transfer concludes Tanpopo's fourth breeding loan; her second resulted in the birth of a female calf on June 16th, 2024, who passed a week later.
