Japan has officially launched a compact nuclear reactor the size of a shipping container—and it’s already powering remote towns.
Called the Yoroi Reactor, this next-gen system produces 1 megawatt of clean energy using molten salt and low-enriched uranium. It’s designed for safety: low pressure, meltdown-proof, and automatically shuts down if power cuts out. Each unit is sealed, buried underground, and runs for 10 years without needing refueling or on-site staff.
Two are already operational in Hokkaido, replacing diesel power. With 50 more planned by 2030, Japan is making a bold move toward zero-emission, community-based energy.
