ダマスクローズ
今年、ダマスクローズは、多くの花を咲かせました。ハマナスの花は、年による差はあまりありませんが、ダマスクローズは、年によって花を咲かせる量が随分と変わります。一昨年、昨年は、あまり花をつけませんませんでしたが、今年は多くの花を咲かせました。ありがとうございます。

This year, the Damask roses bloomed in abundance. Japanese roses don't change much from year to year, but the amount of flowers that bloom for the Damask rose varies greatly from year to year. This perfume represents ‘Zukō’, which has been used in Japan for more than 1,200 years, and has been fused and evolved with modern science and technology to create a liquid perfume.

Zukō is a fine powder made by drying and mixing herbal medicines such as agarwood, clove, cinnamon and turmeric, which has also been used as a medicine. Before beginning their ascetic practices, monks would take Zukō in their mouths or apply it to their bodies to remove impurities and purify their bodies and minds. This is believed to purify three elements: body, speech and spirit.

ハマナス開花
ハマナス花が咲き出しました。
来週、始めくらいから花摘みが始まります。
今年は、昨年より数日、開花が遅いです。ここからの約1ヶ月半、花摘み、蒸留が続きます。

Rugosa roses have bloomed. Picking will begin early next week. This year the blooming is a few days later than last year. We will be busy with picking and distilling for the next month and a half.

春ウコンの蒸留
春ウコンから、香水の原料を創っています。
精油の量は年によって異なり、原料の量が同じでも、たくさん採れる年もあれば、全く採れない年もあります。これは蒸留が終わるまで分かりません。今回は、春ウコン300kg蒸留していますが、この原料は市場にはないので、自分たちで作ります。これは塗香香水の原料として使われます。

およそ1200年前、当時、空海が塗香の材料として使っていたとされる、鬱金や丁子、龍脳、沈香などの生薬原料をもとに、現代の”塗香”として表現しています。

Distillation of turmeric
We are making the raw material for perfume from turmeric.
The amount of essential oil harvested varies from year to year, and even with the same amount of raw material, there are years when we harvest a lot and years when we harvest nothing at all. This is not known until the distillation is complete. This time we distilled 300kg of spring turmeric, and since this raw material is not sold anywhere, we have no choice but to make it ourselves. This will be the raw material for our Zukō perfume.

This is a modern version of Zukō using herbal medicine such as turmeric and glove, camphor and agarwood, which are said to have been used as medicine by 弘法大師空海Kōbō Daishi Kūkai （774–835） about 1,200 years ago.

檜山杉 / ヒヤマスギ
昨日は、朝早く起きて、檜山杉(ヒヤマスギ)の間伐材を貰いに道南まで行ってきました。当日、天気が快晴でしたので杉の状態は良かったですが、函館は札幌から車で4時間くらいの場所ですので軽バンでの移動は大変でした。

この杉は日本固有の品種で、古代から神社仏閣や住居などの材料として使われてきました。伐採したあとの山には、直ぐに苗木を植林することで、100年、200年後の未来に、再び、家や仏閣の材料となります。今回も伐採した山に、この苗木が植えられていました。

この杉は、学名をCryptomeria japonicaクリプトメリアヤポニカと呼び、日本の隠された宝の意味があります。

今回、蒸留した部位は、写真のように葉と枝になります。今朝から蒸留していますが、このスギは、レモンの香りがして、今までに嗅いだことのない香りです。蒸留が終わったら、このスギの香気成分を調べる予定です。

Hiyama cedar
I got up at 4am yesterday and went to southern Hokkaido to collect thinned Hiyama cedar. It's about a four-hour drive from Sapporo.

Hiyama cedar is native to Japan and has been used as a building material for shrines, temples, and houses since ancient times. By planting seedlings in the mountains immediately after felling, they can be used as building materials for houses and temples 80 or 100 years from now. This time, seedlings were planted after felling.

Today, I distilled the leaves and branches as shown in the photo. I've been distilling since this morning, and this cedar has a very nice lemon-like scent. Once the distillation is complete, we plan to use GC/MS to examine the aroma compounds.

雲の衣
雲の衣(くものころも)は、天の川にかかる霧を天女が着る衣に見立てたもので、織姫と彦星が、7月７日の七夕に、天の川で出会うために、織姫は、年に一度、彦星に会えるのを楽しみに織り続けてきた布で着物を作り再会するという物語りです。

この雲の衣は、沈香木から抽出した沈香オイルに、北海道産のトドマツやネロリ、ベルガモット、スターアニスなどの香りを加えています。フレシュで爽やかなベルガモットとスターアニス、そしてオレンジの花であるネロリの香りを中心にアコードを創り、そこにベチーバー、ヒノキ、アガーウッドの香りを加えることで’雲の衣’を表現しています。爽やかさの中に、森の中の樹木や土の香りの両面を持ちあわせた香りです。

イタリア大手新聞であるLa Repubblica 社のウィークリーマガジンd にて、日本の芸術的な香水として、ディセルを紹介していただきました。スザンナさん、ありがとうございます。

先週の土曜日にニューススタンドに並び、ウェブサイトでさまざまな抜粋を見つけることができる。ラ・レプッブリカの最新号は、日本へのラブレターだ。新聞全体が日出ずる国を特集しており、美容ページでは、日本製の芸術的な香水について書いてみようと思いました。ここでは、ニューススタンドやサイトで見つけられる記事と同様に、私が発見したことをお話します。

西欧から観た日本文化とは、西洋のものとは全く異なった文化と言われます。香りの世界も同様に、日本式の香水は西洋スタイルとは全く異なるようです。

The entire newspaper is dedicated to the Land of the Rising Sun and in the beauty pages I thought I would do a little investigation into artistic perfumery made in Japan. ヘナの花
インド、ラジャスタン州にあるヘナ畑に来ています。この時期、花のシーズンではなかったのですが、幾つかの株に花が咲いていました。ヘナの花は、金木犀のようなフローラルな香りがして驚かされました。素晴らしい香りです。

Henna field in Rajasthan, India. It wasn't the flowering season at this time, but some of the plants were in bloom. I was surprised by the floral scent of the henna flowers, which reminded me of osmanthus. It's a wonderful scent.
