今から46年前、韓国の光州市はまさに5·18民主化運動の真っ只中にありました。
5·18民主化運動と言っても、それは5月18日だけに起きたものではなく、17日に全国に拡大された非常戒厳に反発し、民主化を求める学生や市民らの抗争は5月27日まで続きました。ちょうど今から46年前にあたる5月22日は、20日の無差別的な集団発砲の後戒厳軍が一旦市外へ撤退し、光州市が外部から遮断されていた期間にあたります。
この市が孤立した5日間は、市民が秩序を保ちながら街の自治を担った「光州共同体」として記憶されています。しかし5月27日未明、戒厳軍が市内に再突入し、抗争は武力によって鎮圧されました。
この5·18光州民主化運動で家族を失ったり、負傷した人々を抗争の現場で写真を撮り、彼らの記憶を丁寧に記録してきたキム・ウンジュの作品「Light Unhealed」はまもなく5月29日から、大阪の にて展示が始まります。オープニングには作家のキム・ウンジュ氏が来日され、Three Books共同代表の とのトークイベントも企画されています。民主化運動から46年の歳月を経た今も「癒えることがない傷」を記録してきた作品、ぜひこの機会にご覧ください。
Forty-six years ago today, the city of Gwangju in South Korea was in the midst of the 5·18 Gwangju Uprising.
Although often referred to simply as “5·18,” the uprising was not confined to a single day. Following the expansion of nationwide martial law on 17 May 1980, students and citizens demanding democracy continued their resistance until 27 May. May 22 — exactly 46 years ago today — fell during the period after the indiscriminate mass shootings on 20 May, when martial law forces temporarily withdrew from the city and Gwangju was completely cut off from the outside world.
Those five isolated days have since been remembered as the “Gwangju Community,” a period in which citizens maintained order and collectively governed the city themselves. However, in the early hours of 27 May, martial law forces re-entered Gwangju, and the uprising was violently suppressed by military force.
“Light Unhealed” by Kim Eun Ju — an artist who has carefully documented the memories of those who lost family members or were injured during the 5·18 Gwangju Uprising through photographs taken at the sites of the struggle — will open at 176 Gallery in Osaka from 29 May.
Kim Eun Ju will attend the opening in person, and a talk event is also planned. Even 46 years after the uprising, this work continues to record traumas that have never fully healed. We hope you will take this opportunity to experience the exhibition.
