Defence & fiscal policy shake-up under new leadership

Under Prime Minister Takaichi’s leadership, Japan has pledged to hit the 2 % of GDP defence spending target ahead of schedule, within the current fiscal year instead of 2027. 
The new government also outlined a shift in fiscal strategy — emphasising economic stimulation and boosting household income over immediately achieving a primary budget surplus.

Economic slowdown: factory activity hits 19-month low

Japan’s manufacturing sector slipped into its steepest contraction in 19 months as of October 2025, with the flash manufacturing PMI falling to 48.3. 
New orders dropped sharply, and even though output fell less, the trend signals growing concern in Japan’s industrial base and broader economy.

President Donald Trump is going to Japan and South Korea next week to promote an epic financial windfall — at least $900 billion in investments for U.S. factories, a natural gas pipeline and other projects.

Japan and South Korea made those financial commitments in August to try to get Trump to ratchet down his planned tariff rates from 25% to 15%. But as the U.S. president is set to depart Friday night for Asia, the pledges are more of a loose end than money in the bank for American industry.

The son of former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said on Friday that his mother is suffering from health problems and needs urgent medical attention, appealing for her release from military custody.

Kim Aris told Reuters that the 80-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate had asked to see a cardiologist about a month ago, but that he wasn’t able to determine if that request had been granted.

“I am extremely worried,” he said, according to Reuters. “There is no way of verifying if she is even alive.”
