Muslim parents in Japan, or traveling here with a baby: save this before you need it. 🍼🇯🇵

Standing in a Japanese drugstore and trying to work out which baby formula is suitable can be surprisingly difficult.

So instead of telling you to simply “check the ingredients,” we looked into actual products and brands you can search for in Japan.

Here’s the important difference:

✅ Halal-certified options
Bellamy’s Organic and Bubs Australia have halal-certified formula options that can be purchased from Japan. Mostly available for online purchase.

🇯🇵 Japanese formulas we reviewed
• Wakodo Lebens Milk Haihai
• Morinaga Hagukumi
• Snow Brand Megmilk Pure
Available at the local supermarkets and drugstores.

Based on the published ingredient information we reviewed, these three Japanese products do not list pork fat, gelatin or alcohol.

But please note: they are not halal-certified. We could not fully verify the origin of every additive, enzyme or manufacturing process, so HMJ does not describe these products as halal.

That distinction is important.

This post is designed to give you actual names to recognize and search for, while helping you understand what has and has not been verified.

Looking for halal baby formula in Japan? The answer is more complicated than checking the ingredient list. 🍼🇯🇵

For Muslim parents living in or traveling to Japan, finding baby formula can raise a lot of questions:

Is there halal-certified formula available in Japan?
What about Japanese brands at supermarkets and drugstores?
And if pork, gelatin or alcohol aren’t listed, does that mean a formula is halal?

We looked into the information currently available from manufacturers and retailers and found halal-certified imported options that can be purchased from Japan, as well as several commonly available Japanese formulas whose published ingredient lists do not identify pork fat, gelatin or alcohol.

But there is an important distinction: “not listed” does not mean “halal-certified.” Ingredient sources, processing aids and manufacturing conditions may not be clear from a label alone.

Something interesting happened at a small local event in Tokyo last weekend. 👀🇯🇵

For the third year, halal Japanese beef returned to Nishimoro Marche in Sangenjaya.

But this year was different.

The halal beef booth welcomed its largest Muslim turnout yet. And alongside returning favorites, visitors could try two new halal Wagyu skewers, including the eye-catching Wagyu Tornado. 🥩🔥

What makes this story especially interesting is that Nishimoro Marche isn’t a Muslim event or a halal food festival.

It’s a local Japanese event introducing the food, products and destinations of the Nishimoro area of Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, with halal food becoming a natural part of that experience.

Planning Sapporo? Don’t settle for just “finding something halal.” Save these two dining experiences instead. 👀

In central Susukino, we found two very different Muslim-friendly dinner experiences that are still quite rare in Hokkaido.

One is all about freshly fried kushiage, halal Wagyu, Hokkaido-style potato, and seasonal vegetables.

The other brings together halal Wagyu, halal lamb, chicken, crab, scallops, vegetables, unlimited soft drinks, ice cream — and even all-you-can-eat tuna sashimi on selected days.

Both are close to Susukino Station, but the experience is completely different.

At Susukino Depart, the Muslim-friendly course is available during dinner only, with a generous selection including halal wagyu, halal lamb, halal chicken, crab, scallops, and vegetables grilled at your table.
