――――――――――
For more than ten years I've read Natalie Goldberg's books — the author of Writing Down the Bones.
I've interviewed over 2,000 people in twenty years, and yet for more than a decade I couldn't write the first line of my own book. What finally moved me was one instruction of hers: Keep the hand moving.
Last week, I finally sat face to face with her.
What stayed with me was surprisingly quiet: writing, and sitting. She has practiced Zen for fifty years. When I asked what she does when the well runs dry, she said: "Just sitting. Last night I sat outside and listened to the leaves."
Underneath those words: Zen, haiku, and Japan.
