BARINGO ; A new study has raised concern over gaps in the fight against visceral leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar, in Baringo County.

The study, which surveyed 422 community members and 32 health workers in endemic areas, found that access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment services remains a challenge for many residents.

While 73.7% of those surveyed knew someone who had been affected by kala-azar, 74.4% of households reported walking to the nearest health facility to seek care.

The study also found that 70.1% of respondents reported having no organized kala-azar prevention and control programme in their communities.

Among reported cases, 68.5% received treatment, with 96.2% of those who received treatment completing it, highlighting both the importance of access to care and the potential for successful treatment when services are available.

Health facilities themselves face resource and capacity challenges. Only 62.5% of health workers had received refresher training, while just 50% reported having laboratory equipment, reagents and pharmaceutical drugs available.

Community outreach was another major gap, with 81.3% of health workers saying their facilities were not involved in outreach activities.

The findings point to the need for bringing kala-azar diagnostic and treatment services closer to communities, ensuring consistent supplies of medicines and laboratory resources, strengthening health-worker training and expanding community outreach.

The researchers also recommend improved surveillance to help identify cases early and strengthen the overall response to the disease.

The study, titled “Community and Health Worker Perspectives on Resource Availability and Service Accessibility for Visceral Leishmaniasis Management in Baringo County, Kenya,” was presented at the 18th Annual KESSA Conference in Orlando, Florida, held from September 3–6, 2026.

For Baringo, the message is clear: strengthening services at the community level could be key to closing the gaps in the fight against kala-azar.

The findings were researched by Emily Kiptui, a PhD student at MMUST, in collaboration with Professor Elimelda Moige Ongeri, Ph.D., Dean of the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T).
