The secret to predicting a global crisis might be hidden in a pepperoni pizza. For decades, a quirky theory known as the Pentagon Pizza Index has suggested that a sudden spike in late-night delivery orders to U.S. defense hubs is a surefire sign that a major military operation is about to go down.
The concept is surprisingly simple: when a crisis hits, staff at the Pentagon and CIA have to work through the night. Since they cannot leave their desks, they order in, creating a noticeable surge at nearby pizzerias.
This "pizza intelligence" famously predicted the 1990 invasion of Kuwait and has more recently been linked to activity preceding strikes in the Middle East.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is well aware of the online sleuths tracking these doughy data points. He recently joked that he has considered ordering mass amounts of pizza on random Friday nights just to "throw the whole system off" and keep everyone off balance.
While the Pentagon officially dismisses the index as "fake but funny," the internet remains convinced that when the ovens are working overtime, something big is brewing.
