Her Excellency Mrs. Rachel Ruto, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, was born on 20th November 1968 in Likuyani, Kakamega Constituency.
Because she was born in Kakamega, a predominantly Luhya region, many people assume she is Luhya. However, Mama Rachel is actually purely Kalenjin. She was raised and schooled in a Luhya area, but she is ethnically Kalenjin.
Mama Taifa is the daughter of Samuel Kirwa Kimeto and Susan Chelangat Kimeto, who named her Rachel Chebet.
Rachel attended Likuyani Primary School and later Butere Girls High School for her O and A levels. She graduated from Kenyatta University with a Bachelor of Education Degree, followed by a Master of Arts Degree from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in 2011.
Though trained as a teacher, she did not stay long in the classroom. She voluntarily retired and ventured into entrepreneurship in the tours and travel business, focusing on tourist destinations like the Maasai Mara and Mombasa. She also organized Israel tours for Christians and other interested groups.
Rachel has also been engaged in several impactful programs and initiatives. She founded the Mama Cycling initiative, which promotes healthy living through physical exercise. She has supported a poultry project supplying chicks to women across the country at affordable prices. She also founded the Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO), which helped popularize table banking in Kenya. It is through her work at JOYWO that she received the International Honorary Fellowship Award on Women Empowerment from Binary University in Malaysia.
Rachel married William Ruto on 21st December 1991, at a beautiful wedding that was officiated by the AIC Church. The two met during a Christian Union rally at the University of Nairobi. Rachel had traveled from Kenyatta University for the rally, and Ruto was a student at the University of Nairobi.
Interestingly, 21st December is both President William Ruto’s birthday and their wedding anniversary. The couple always celebrates his birthday alongside their anniversary.
Together, they have managed to raise and nurture a family of six children, namely: June Ruto, Nick Ruto, Charlene Ruto, George Ruto, Stephanie Ruto and Nadia Ruto.
Rachel is a devoted Christian known for her quiet demeanor, simple lifestyle and signature short hair.
Today, 20th November, Her Excellency Rachel Ruto turns 57. Happy Birthday Mama Taifa.
