GOVERNOR BII LAUDS COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS ON FERTILIZER SUBSIDY PROGRAM
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has lauded the collaborative efforts between the national and county governments on the fertilizer subsidy program, confirming that the initiative is progressing smoothly and on schedule. The program is set to support farmers across the county as they prepare for the next planting season.
During a visit to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and Kenya Seed facilities, Governor Bii expressed confidence in the program’s effectiveness, noting that the stores are fully stocked and well-prepared to meet the needs of local farmers.
"We are committed to ensuring that our farmers have all the necessary resources for a successful planting season. Starting next week, farmers will begin receiving their e-subsidy vouchers, ensuring they have access to the fertilizer they need," said Governor Bii.
He also emphasized the importance of ensuring convenient access to the subsidized fertilizer for farmers throughout the county.
"Our six last-mile stores across the county will play a crucial role in making sure that our farmers can easily access the subsidized fertilizer without any unnecessary delays," he added, highlighting the importance of local distribution points in making the program more efficient.
On his part, Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr. Paul Rono reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting local farmers, particularly maize growers.
"The government is ready to buy maize from our farmers. We are dedicated to ensuring that their produce is bought at fair prices," Dr. Rono said.
He also announced the suspension of wheat imports until all locally grown wheat has been purchased. "We will not import any wheat until all the local produce is bought. This is in line with our commitment to supporting our farmers and boosting the local agricultural sector," Dr. Rono added.
He added, "We are committed to ensuring that farmers have access to the necessary resources and that their produce is valued fairly in the market. This partnership between the national and county governments is a testament to our dedication to improving the agricultural sector," said Dr. Rono.
His sentiments were echoed by Governor Bii who lauded the wheat importation halt.
"This decision is a vital step in ensuring that our hardworking farmers receive fair returns for their efforts. By focusing on purchasing all local produce before considering imports, we are creating a favorable market environment for our farmers," he stated
The Governor was accompanied by his Bungoma counterpart Hon. Ken Lusaka, MPs Prof. Phyllis Bartoo (Moiben) and Hon. David Kiplagat (Soy).
