PART 15
Exactly one year after her miserable marriage began, Ngozi woke up one morning, looked at her crying son and hissed loudly.
βWetin be this? I no fit continue like this,β she said as she kicked her slippers across the room. The boy kept crying on the floor, his nose running like tap water.
She quickly tied her wrapper, combed her rough hair backwards with her fingers, opened the door wide, and stormed out of the house. Her son crawled after her, crying and calling, βMama! Mama!β but she didnβt even look back.
Villagers who saw her leaving thought something serious had happened.
When she got to her fatherβs compound, her father was outside, sharpening his cutlass. As soon as he saw Ngozi entering the compound, he dropped the cutlass in shock.
βNgozi? Wetin you dey find for here?β
She dropped her bag on the ground and stood with hands on her waist. βPapa, I don come back! I no fit stay for that house again. That short man and that yeye childββ
Before she could finish, her father screamed, βTufiaaaakwaa!!!β He grabbed his cutlass without saying another word and chased her like chicken.
βThun. !der fire you there! You no go stay husband house, you no go d!!ie! Leave my compound, euil spirit!β
Ngozi screamed and ran out barefooted, wrapper dragging on the floor. Some children playing nearby started clapping and laughing as she disappeared into the bush path.
When her father returned, he stood under the mango tree and started cursing her loudly, spitting on the ground and shaking his head.
βGod puni !sh the day wey I born that girl. She go carry disgrace kpai person.β
Ngozi finally got back to her husbandβs house, sweating and breathing like someone that just escaped lion. Her son was still crying on the floor, but she ignored him completely.
