A Pennsylvania woman is accused of secretly giving birth to four infants, killing them, and concealing their bodies in her home.
State police said the remains were discovered Sept. 13 inside the Cadogan Township residence where 39-year-old Jessica Mauthe had recently been evicted.
One baby was found inside a bedroom closet. Three others were found in bags inside the attic, according to court documents.
Investigators say Mauthe admitted to delivering the babies at the home and concealing their deaths. In one case, she allegedly gave birth on a toilet and left the newborn there until it stopped making noise before wrapping it in towels and placing it in a closet.
She told police she passed out after giving birth on another occasion and awoke to find the baby dead.
Neighbors, many of whom regularly cared for Mauthe’s two surviving young sons, expressed shock and anger over the discovery.
“It’s just evil. It’s beyond sick,” neighbor Carmen Felix told CBS. “Them two boys of hers, the whole neighborhood babysat them. We had no idea she was pregnant.”
Another resident, Elizabeth Germy, said she noticed a foul odor upstairs when she helped the landlord search the house after Mauthe’s eviction.
Mauthe is charged with criminal homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and four counts each of concealing the death of a child and abuse of a co**se. She is being held without bail.
