In response, the Committee Chairperson defended police operations, saying the sites have long been “death traps” and that security officers were deployed to maintain peace.

He promised to deliver a formal statement within two weeks as directed by the Speaker.

Prof. Jaldesa, however, dismissed the explanation, saying: “Deaths or no deaths, the police are there to protect the people. Why should there be deaths when the police are there? That is an admission of failure by the security agencies.”

Moyale MP Prof. Guyo Waqo Jaldesa has accused police of harassing artisanal miners in Hillo, Dabel, after 40 residents were arrested and fined KSh20,000 each.

Raising the matter in Parliament, Prof. Jaldesa said the miners were working on ancestral land and accused security agencies of frustrating livelihoods instead of offering protection. He demanded answers from the Chairperson of the Administration and Internal Security Committee on why artisanal mining in non-restricted areas is being criminalised.

The Committee Chair defended police presence, citing the mining sites as “death traps,” but promised to table a formal response in two weeks. Prof. Jaldesa dismissed the explanation as an admission of failure by security agencies.

“What the Cabinet Secretary is requesting is additional tools, so that if there are seepages in tax collection, then he will have tools in his toolbox to get to those individuals. In this case, he is saying he wants to appoint agents… So it’s not just going to be any other person. That person will actually be sought through vigorous interrogation if they will be able to do this particular work.”

The High Court in Marsabit has certified as urgent a petition filed by Kana Golicha Duba against the State Law Office, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), and two others.

In orders issued on October 2, 2025, Justice Francis Rayola Olel directed the petitioner to serve both the petition and the Notice of Motion on the respondents electronically and physically by October 6. The respondents are required to file their responses by October 13, since October 10 is a public holiday.

The application will be heard inter partes on October 14, 2025, with the judge warning that failure to comply with the court’s directives will attract penal consequences.

Residents of Garissa town have raised concern over an acute water shortage that has persisted for the past three months, leaving many households struggling to access clean and safe water.

According to the residents, the Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) has failed to restore supply, with claims that the leaders are preoccupied with activities in Nairobi rather than addressing the crisis on the ground.

The locals have further faulted the Governor’s leadership, accusing him of neglecting urgent service delivery while focusing on his 2027 senatorial ambitions.

The residents are now appealing for swift intervention to end the prolonged water shortage, which they say has made life unbearable in the county.
