OVER 100 ISIOLO YOUTHS BENEFIT FROM TVET PROGRAM COURTESY OF SAFARICOM FOUNDATION

Over 100 youth from Isiolo County are set to benefit from vocational training under the Wezesha Vijana TVET Mashinani Programme.

The initiative, sponsored by the Safaricom Foundation in partnership with the County Government of Isiolo, aims to equip young people with practical skills to create jobs and improve their livelihoods.

It targets unemployed youth, offering short-term technical courses in mobile phone repair, motorcycle mechanics, plumbing, and baking and pastry.

The three-and-a-half-month training programme is designed to help participants become self-reliant and generate their own income.

During the launch of the programme’s second cohort at Kambi Turkana in Burat Ward, the Youth and Entrepreneurship Head at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Irene Wairimu, said that vulnerable youth—including persons with disabilities and young mothers—would gain hands-on vocational skills to help them secure dignified livelihoods.

Wairimu emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, noting that it is the result of a strong partnership between CRS, Safaricom Foundation, Caritas Isiolo, the County Government of Isiolo, and several local training institutions.

“TVET Mashinani is a community-based vocational training initiative that provides marketable skills to youth of both genders, including those with disabilities,” she said.

Isiolo County Chief Officer for Vocational Training, Mr. Ibrahim Chala, said the programme is already transforming lives, with 115 participants currently enrolled.

He said 35 youth are training in plumbing, 20 in motorcycle repair, 35 in mobile phone repair, and 25 in baking and pastry.

Chala added that participants will receive certificates upon completion of the training. To support the programme’s expansion, new facilities—including an administration block, welding offices, and electrical workshops—will soon be constructed.

Safaricom Foundation Programme Manager, Mr. Nicholas Wechuli, reiterated the foundation’s commitment to supporting youth empowerment across the country, noting that the initiative is part of a broader youth-skilling programme targeting multiple counties.

“When we started the TVET Mashinani Programme in 2023, we sponsored 333 youth across Isiolo, Marsabit, and Nairobi,” said Wechuli. “This second cohort will train over 300 youth, and by the end of the project, we aim to have empowered at least 2,400 young people.”

He encouraged the youth to embrace technical skills rather than focusing solely on white-collar jobs. “TVET courses are far better than chasing white-collar jobs. These are permanent skills that will never fade away—skills you can use anywhere to earn a living,” he said.

Wechuli added that trainees will receive certificates registered with the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), enabling them to seek jobs both locally and abroad.

Isiolo County Executive Committee Member for Tourism, Trade, and Cooperatives, Dr. Lawrence Mwongela, urged more young people to enroll in the programme, saying it provides a solid foundation for economic independence.

“We urge the youth to join these programmes to gain skills that will help them generate income and shape their futures. As the County Government of Isiolo, we are fully committed to the success of this programme. Our department continues to support such initiatives because they uplift our community,” said Dr. Mwongela.

With the launch of the Wezesha Vijana TVET Mashinani Programme, Isiolo County is taking a bold step toward tackling youth unemployment and promoting self-reliance.

Through the partnership between Safaricom Foundation and the County Government, young people are gaining not just certificates but also lifelong skills to transform their futures and build a more skilled and empowered population.

ISIOLO POLICE LAUNCH TOLL FREE EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBER TO CURB INSECURITY

The Police department in Isiolo County has launched a toll-free emergency hotline and opened a joint command centre in a bid to fight incidents of insecurity reported in the area.

Residents can now report crimes and emergencies free of charge, following the introduction of the hotline and the command centre by the police in collaboration with the Regional Pastoralist Peace Link organisation.

The new emergency number which will be operational 24 hours a day is 0800 722 180 , allowing members of the public to report any incidents, receive emergency assistance, and access timely responses.

Isiolo Deputy County Commissioner Edwin Kuria said the initiative is aimed at strengthening community policing and improving emergency response mechanisms within the county.

The residents are required to report incidents directly to the command centre at any time, as the joint response centre would ensure there was faster reaction to emergencies and crimes as soon as they are reported.

Isiolo County Police Commander Paul Wambugu assured the public that the command centres will be staffed at all times for the investment to be successful.

“There will always be someone at the call centre to respond to any issues, day or night. We encourage the public to make responsible use of this service, especially in reporting criminal activities,” Wambugu said.

The programme is supported by the Regional Pastoralist Peace Link, which aims to bridge the gap between the police and communities, particularly in hard-to-reach areas often affected by insecurity.

A programme officer with the organisation Mr Mohamed Bare said the hotline will help tackle issues such as banditry, youth radicalisation, drug trafficking, and the petty crimes as well.

“We launched this toll-free number to support local communities in working closely with the police to address the growing security challenges,” he said.

Isiolo Secretary of Interfaith group Bishop Stephen Kalunyu welcomed the move noting that many people live far from police stations and also majority could not afford airtime.

PS LIBAN URGES ISIOLO YOUTHS TO REGISTER FOR NYOTA PROGRAM AND GET 50K GOVERNMENT MONEY

The government has rolled out the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) project in Isiolo County, but registration among local youth remains low, with only four out of the ten wards participating so far.

Speaking during a sensitization forum, Principal Secretary for Petroleum Mohamed Liban expressed concern that most of those who had registered were from the far-flung wards of Kinna, Garbatulla, and Sericho, while youth from the more accessible areas around Isiolo Municipality had shown minimal interest.

Liban said the sensitization meeting was necessary since the county’s response to the pilot phase of the government’s youth empowerment programme had been discouraging, particularly in wards nearer to the town.

The PS explained that registration and application for the grant have been fully automated, and eligible youth can now access the platform through the USSD code *254 #, similar to the Hustler Fund.

They are required to select the NYOTA option to apply for business support funding.

According to Liban, the five-year initiative is supported by the World Bank and aims to empower young Kenyans by providing business skills, job opportunities, and promoting a saving culture.

The project targets vulnerable youth aged between 18 and 29 to help them increase their income, contribute to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), and improve their chances of sustainable employment in key economic sectors.

He noted that the NYOTA project seeks to empower over 100,000 youth in its first phase through entrepreneurship and employment, focusing on young people who did not progress beyond Form Four.

Liban urged local leaders to mobilize youth to take advantage of the opportunity, revealing that each ward in the country is expected to produce 70 qualified beneficiaries.

Isiolo County is therefore required to enroll 700 youth across its 10 wards.

The PS assured residents that he would return on October 17, 2025, to review the county’s progress and ensure every ward meets its target.

Each successful applicant, he said, will receive a grant of Sh50,000 to support business growth.

The selection process will involve thorough vetting to ensure the funds are used for productive investments.

Liban added that the programme will support enterprises in sectors such as agriculture, digital technology, creative industries, and green energy.

The Sh5 billion NYOTA project, implemented in partnership with the World Bank, aims to benefit 101,500 youth from 1,450 wards nationwide, each producing 70 beneficiaries.
