Isiolo North constituency is expected to register about 19,000 new voters, but only a low number have turned up as the exercise entered its second day.

North Horr Member of Parliament Hon. Hajj Wario Adhe has initiated talks with the National Youth Service (NYS) to establish a training camp in his constituency, saying it will transform youth empowerment in northern Kenya.

On Tuesday, Hon. Adhe hosted a delegation from NYS headquarters led by Director of Personnel and Administration, Mr. Felix Ikumiru. The team held a public participation forum in Turbi, where residents welcomed the proposal, noting it would equip youths with skills and promote regional cohesion.

If approved, the facility would be the only NYS camp north of the equator, offering vocational training, discipline, and access to employment opportunities.

Hon. Adhe said the project will address unemployment and ensure young people in Marsabit County and the wider northern region are included in the national development agenda.

LOW TURNOUT PERSISTS IN ISIOLO VOTER REGISTRATION

The voter registration exercise in Isiolo County entered its second day on Tuesday with a low number of residents turning up.

IEBC Isiolo North officer and Deputy County Elections Manager, Wario Ibrahim, said the commission is targeting More than 19,000 new voters but expressed concern over the slow response. He appealed to residents, particularly Gen Z youth, to take advantage of the exercise to register, transfer, or verify their voter details.

Parents have also been urged to support the process by ensuring their eligible children register, while calls have been made for greater inclusivity to enable persons with disabilities to participate fully.

According to IEBC, only a national ID or passport is required to register.

Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina has dissolved the government, including Prime Minister Christian Ntsay, after youth-led protests over water and electricity shortages turned deadly.

The United Nations says 22 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the unrest.

Rajoelina said outgoing officials will serve in an interim capacity as a new prime minister is appointed within days.

Curfews remain in place in the capital and other cities to curb further violence.

FEAR GRIPS RESIDENTS OF MWANGAZA B AFTER TWO FIRE INCIDENTS LINKED TO LAND DISPUTES

Residents of Mwangaza B in Wabera Ward, Isiolo County, are living in fear after several houses were reduced to ashes in separate fire incidents within just a week. Locals now believe the fires are linked to ongoing land disputes in the area.

Godffrey Muithurwa, a 52-year-old elder, says the community’s happiness has been replaced by fear and uncertainty, noting that some people have come forward claiming ownership of the land they currently occupy.

Speaking after visiting the site of the latest blaze, which occurred on Sunday night, residents alleged the incident—together with last week’s fire—was part of a wider scheme to forcefully evict them. They are now calling for thorough investigations.

The residents further appealed to both the Isiolo County Government and the national Ministry of Lands to intervene by helping them register their plots and acquire legal title deeds, saying this would end the persistent disputes and restore peace in the area.

Our Story

Baliti FM is a community radio station located in Isiolo town, about 285 Kilometres north of Nairobi city. Baliti FM broadcasts to a radius of 130 Kilometres in Isiolo County. The community radio broadcasts on 102.7 from Isiolo town.

It was established by the Foundation for Women Pastoralists (FOWOPA) in collaboration with the local community in 2012. Baliti is an Oromo word meaning “Umoja” in Swahili, and can translate to ours/together/togetherness. Baliti FM went on air on July 17th 2013. The community radio station is built on the concept of “Community Driven Development (CDD)”, a concept that places people central to development from the onset to implementation. Based on this concept of CDD, Baliti FM will be independent, non-commercial, not-for-profit, and volunteer-based radio station covering the Upper Easter region, an area that has faced the worst historical injustices in Kenya since independence. These are issues that are dire to humankind and at the heart of Baliti FM.
