Just 15 days after her wedding, 20-year-old Petchiammal lost her husband and was left to raise their daughter alone.

But grief was only the beginning.

While working on construction sites, in hotels and at tea shops in Tamil Nadu, she repeatedly faced harassment.

So she made a life-changing decision.

She cut her hair, began wearing men’s clothing and adopted the name Muthu.

For the next 36 years, she lived publicly as a man so she could work more safely, protect herself and provide for her daughter.

Neighbours, employers and much of the wider community believed Muthu was a man. Her daughter and close relatives knew the truth, but helped keep the identity private.

Petchiammal took whatever work she could find and spent decades building a safer future for her child.

Even after her daughter grew up and married, she continued living as Muthu, saying the identity had given her courage, dignity and protection.

She did not change who she was because she wanted to disappear.

She did it because society had made being a vulnerable woman too dangerous.

For 36 years, one mother carried a secret so her daughter could have a better life.
