Tembo e Twiga – Day 13: everything in its right place

After a few days in tourist areas, we’re back to the real projects — the rural realities, the stories I truly love.

This is the first of three days we’ll spend with Treedom Tanzania. With us are Paul, Lenana, and Gabriel, explaining every step of their work.

Treedom’s work is easy to explain but powerful in its impact: they collaborate with local reforestation partners — in this case, Matonyok — to plant fruit trees. These trees not only absorb CO₂ and help the environment, but they also produce fruit that can be sold, creating a sustainable economy where before there was none.

It’s a win-win.

Today we met a farmer who used to grow only maize and potatoes. Now, thanks to avocado and papaya trees, he has significantly increased his income — and even created jobs for others, who help with harvesting and selling the fruit.

Even Our Discovery Travel has its own forest on Treedom. That’s where all the trees we plant through our Tembo and Twiga crowdfunding campaign will go.

Tomorrow we’ll visit more farmers, discover more stories, and meet more people.

This is what I love about our journeys.

Right now, we’re at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, 1700 meters above sea level — and it’s really cold. Tomorrow’s daytime lows are expected to be around 10–11°C. Tomorrow night we’ll probably die of hypothermia.

It’s been nice knowing you.

Day 3: The Final Stretch of the Journey for Water!

Today marks the grand finale of our transformative walk—from the vibrant heart of Loitokitok town to the cherished landscapes of Iltilal. With each step, we honor the veins of life that water our lands, nourish our people, and connect our shared destiny.

This isn’t just a walk. It’s a movement. A call to protect, safeguard, and revive our water catchment areas. These sacred spaces deserve our collective guardianship—not just today, but every day.

Let’s keep the momentum flowing. Let’s ensure water flows not only in our rivers but in the legacy we leave behind.

Day 1 — The Journey for Water Begins!
23/7/2025

Today, something truly inspiring flowed through the heart of East Africa. Early this morning, the Journey for Water officially kicked off—a powerful cross-border initiative sponsored by WWF to shine a light on water conservation and unity.

Flagged off by the District Commissioner of Tanzania at Kimengelia, Rongai, this journey brought together passionate teams from WWF Kenya and Tanzania, Matonyok Organization 🇰đŸ‡ȘđŸ‡č🇿, RUA Kenya and Tanzania, alongside the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the German cooperation, and the governments of Kenya and Tanzania.

Together, we walked along the Kimengelia River, standing up for our shared commitment to protect and restore this vital water source.

Checkpoint 51 marked the end of Day 1—the perfect start to this three-day trek that’s all about action, collaboration, and resilience.

This isn’t just a walk. It’s a movement. A symbol of regional solidarity and a promise to safeguard water for future generations.

Hope in Every Seed
Representing BSM , Visitted the Matonyok Project the last couple of days. And the visit was nothing short of inspiring. Led by the visionary Alais Lenana Momoi , supported by Momoi Paul Losotua , this grassroots initiative is planting more than just crops — it’s planting opportunity.

Through farmer funding with sustainable plants, the Matonyok team is equipping local communities to grow thriving businesses from the soil up. And with the introduction of bee hives, Matonyok is not only helping farmers increase yields and income, but also playing a vital role in protecting our planet’s pollinators.

🐝 Every hive helps fight the extinction of bees.
đŸŒ± Every plant is a step toward economic empowerment.
🌍 Every farmer is a partner in shaping a resilient future.

This is what real impact looks like. A future where people, nature, and economy grow together.
