NEMA Intervenes After Building Discharges Raw Sewage in Kitengela
Kitengela, Kenya – A building along Old Namanga Road in Kitengela has come under scrutiny after it was found discharging raw sewage into the public space, sparking public outcry. The matter was brought to light through media coverage, prompting swift action from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
Residents and business owners in the area had raised concerns about the potential health risks posed by the unhygienic discharge. The raw sewage not only created an unbearable stench but also posed serious environmental and health hazards, with fears of water contamination and disease outbreaks.
Following media reports, NEMA officials visited the site and issued immediate directives to the building’s management. The directives include halting further discharge, proper waste disposal measures, and compliance with environmental regulations.
Speaking on the matter, a NEMA representative stated, "We have issued strict instructions to the management of the building to cease all illegal sewage discharge and to implement a proper waste management system. Failure to comply will result in legal action."
Local residents have welcomed the intervention, calling for stricter enforcement to prevent similar cases in the future. Many have urged authorities to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with environmental laws.
As investigations continue, the building’s management is expected to present a comprehensive waste disposal plan to NEMA to avoid further penalties.
This incident serves as a wake-up call to property owners in Kitengela and beyond, reminding them of their duty to uphold environmental standards and safeguard public health.
