Part of Hobley's (Junior) Dormitory at Kakamega High School was destroyed by fire on Friday evening, following reports of unrest at the institution earlier in the day.

Firefighters from Kakamega County responded swiftly and managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the school.

A 40-year-old man from Mbagara Sub-Location in Mautuma Ward, Lugari Constituency, has died after battling severe burn injuries for nearly four months following a tragic accident at his home.

William Kidatai sustained burns on approximately 70 percent of his body in February 2026 after suffering an epileptic seizure and falling into a fire he had lit while boiling water for his son. According to reports, he suddenly developed a seizure, collapsed into the flames, and suffered extensive injuries.

Following the incident, Kidatai was admitted to hospital, where he remained under treatment as medical personnel fought to save his life. He later succumbed to his injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, where he had been receiving specialized care.

His body has been moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary as family members and relatives begin funeral and burial arrangements.
