The Tiriki Circumcision Divide: Vasomi vs. Va Ingolole

The Tiriki are counting down the days to the revered circumcision season — idumi or itumi. Within the community, two distinct factions continue to shape this tradition in very different ways.

🔵 1. The Modernized (Vasomi)

“Vasomi” refers to the educated — those who embraced formal schooling, Christianity, and Western ways during the colonial period. Their circumcision ceremonies have since evolved to reflect these modern influences:

Church involvement and Christian prayers are common.

Traditional dances and songs are toned down or altered.

Their music often includes drums and gospel rhythms.

Dressing is modest and less traditional.

To the Va Ingolole, this is seen as a dilution of sacred customs and identity. That’s why they sometimes refer to the Vasomi as Vanusu — those who are half.

🟤 2. The Conservatives (Va Ingolole/Vatwaa)

These are the guardians of ancestral ways — deeply rooted in spiritual tradition and were skeptical of colonial influence. Their ceremonies remain sacred and largely untouched:

Boys wear animal skins and undergo ancient initiation rituals.

Traditional songs, tribal dances, and oral teachings are central.

Elders lead every aspect of the process.

Tsingolole (ceremonial masks) are worn, symbolizing spiritual identity and awakening.

🪶 The Cultural Tension

This divide — Vasomi vs. Va Ingolole — reflects a deeper struggle between modernity and tradition. It continues to shape:

The songs, dances, and masks (tsingolole) used.

Who leads the rites — pastors or elders.

Whether the initiation is kept private or made more public.

Yet despite these differences, both groups stand for one eternal truth:

> Circumcision is not just a rite — it is the heartbeat of Tiriki identity.

Whether one follows the path of the Vasomi or the Va Ingolole, the ultimate goal remains the same:

To mold boys into responsible men — each guided by values that define who they are and where they belong. The age-set system remains central.
