On March 3, 2025, thousands of refugees at Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp staged protests over severe shortages of food and water. The demonstrations, initially peaceful, escalated when police attempted to disperse the protesters, they shot seven refugees mercilessly resulting in injuries and at least one fatality.
The camp, which hosts over 148,000 refugees primarily from South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi, has been facing deteriorating living conditions due to funding cuts from key donors, including the United States. These reductions have led to significant decreases in food rations and inadequate healthcare services, water problems prompting the recent unrest.
