How Uhuru Kenyatta’s 1997 Parliamentary Bid Birthed Moses Kuria’s Long Career of Political Betrayal
In 1997, a young Uhuru Kenyatta stepped onto the political stage, eyeing Gatundu South — the seat once held by his father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. His entry electrified the country. To many, Uhuru’s victory looked like a done deal.
But beneath the surface, a dirty political storm was brewing — one that would sabotage his first attempt at leadership.
Uhuru’s main challenger was none other than Moses Muihia, the man who eventually humbled the young Kenyatta through a scheme dripping in malice, engineered by:
✅ Moses Kuria — then an ambitious political hustler hungry for relevance
✅ Ngengi Muigai — Uhuru’s own cousin
Three days before the 1997 General Election, Kuria and Ngengi advised Muihia to “go into hiding.” Muihia complied. That same evening, the real script unfolded.
Kuria’s team, armed with loudspeakers on pickup trucks, stormed the villages shouting that the Kenyatta family had kidnapped Moses Muihia and were planning to eliminate him to clear the path for Uhuru.
By dawn, Gatundu South villagers were whispering on every dusty road:
“Nasinilimwambia… hii familia ni ya wauaji.”
The anger was volcanic. Residents swore to vote for Moses Muihia — “dead or alive.” And just like that, Uhuru Kenyatta’s first attempt at elective politics was crushed under Moses Kuria’s calculated, dirty mudslinging.
✅Kuria’s 2014 Return: More Betrayal, More Chaos
Fast-forward to 2014. After the death of Hon. Joseph Ngugi (Jossy), Uhuru endorsed the MP’s widow, Joyce Ngugi, to inherit her husband’s seat.
But Moses Kuria returned to his old tricks.
During TNA nominations, Kuria unleashed goons who stole all the ballots — denying the widow her chance. The people of Gatundu were furious and vowed to punish him at the ballot.
Joyce Ngugi tried to run through another party. Blocked.
She tried to go independent. Blocked.
Residents rallied behind Lawyer Kiarie Kamere (NARC) as the alternative.
But two days to the election, Kamere was forced to withdraw at gunpoint.
With no opponent left, Kuria was handed the seat on a silver platter — not by voters, but by intimidation, manipulation, and fear.
✅2017: Kuria Threatens to “Zayunize” Opponents
In 2017, Kuria doubled down.
At the Gatundu South tallying centre, he deployed armed goons to intimidate and threaten anyone who dared contest him, bragging that he would “Zayunize” his rivals if they even dreamed of defeating him.
✅2022 Juja By-Election: Betraying Uhuru Again
Before 2022, Kuria used his CCK party in the Juja by-elections to sabotage Uhuru’s Jubilee candidate — a move that later revealed Kuria was quietly working with Ruto behind Uhuru’s back.
Classic Kuria: betrayal for hire.
✅2025 Mbeere North By-Election: Kuria the “Political Mercenary” Returns
In 2025, barely months after resigning from Ruto’s Cabinet claiming he “would never work with an oppressive regime,” Moses Kuria resurfaced — not as a reformer, but as a mercenary.
His candidate appeared innocent, but his mission was not.
Kuria was secretly helping Ruto split DP’s Newton Karish’s votes in favour of UDA’s WaMuthende.
The plan worked through a cocktail of police intimidation, goons, and state machinery tampering with the people’s will.
✅2027: Ruto Gives Kuria His Biggest Betrayal Assignment Yet
As Kenya heads to the 2027 polls, Ruto has handed Kuria a new assignment: run for Nairobi Governor — not to win, but to split Opposition votes and help Johnson Sakaja retain the seat.
Because if there’s one politician Ruto can count on to betray anyone for political expediency — it’s Moses Kuria.
The Big Question
Will Kenyan voters fall for Moses Kuria’s same old political chess of betrayals — or has the mask finally fallen off?
