The rising cases of femicide in Kenya calls for a serious dialogue
In January 2026, 23-year-old Amos Wambua married 28-year-old Grace Mungai, a native of Kitui County who relocated to Machakos County to start a new life with him. At the time, Grace was in the early stages of her pregnancy.
Seeking to bring the rest of Grace's family into the homestead, Wambua coordinated with his own mother, who personally traveled to Kitui in March 2026. She brought Grace’s two young daughters, 8-year-old Joyce Mutheu and 4-year-old Sarah Mungai, to live with the newlyweds in Kaseveni Village. Because Grace and the children were new to the village, the family kept largely to themselves, and neighbors knew very little about them.
Just two months after the young girls arrived, the home turned into a crime scene. On Sunday, June 14, 2026, Amos Wambua allegedly turned on his family. Homicide investigators have established that Wambua executed his seven-month-pregnant wife, Grace, and her two young daughters inside his own house.
To conceal the slaughter, Wambua systematically transported the four bodies to a remote, dense, and nearly inaccessible thicket located approximately three kilometers away from his residence.
The crime remained hidden until a neighbor's dog (owned by the suspect’s uncle) emerged from the bushes carrying a child's severed leg back to a homestead. Initially mistaken for a piece of scavenged meat, shocked residents quickly realized it was human remains. The discovery triggered an immediate joint search by local residents and police, who followed the animal's trail deep into the rough-terrain thicket, uncovering the severely decomposing remains of Grace and her daughters.
Subsequent post-mortem examinations and forensic analyses conducted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed the true extent of the brutality. Autopsy results confirmed that Grace was seven months pregnant at the time of her death. Furthermore, forensic evidence proved that one of the young daughters had been subjected to r**e before she was murdered. Due to the remote dumping site, the remains of the other daughter had suffered severe mutilation and ravaging by wild animals.
Immediately after the killings, Amos Wambua fled Machakos County and went into hiding in Kajiado County, switching off his primary phone link to evade DCI tracking nets.
Investigations quickly revealed that Wambua did not act entirely alone in the aftermath. His mother was arrested by detectives after it was discovered she actively assisted her son in evading the police. Immediately following the murders, she discarded her old phone line and registered a new, secretive SIM card, which she used exclusively to maintain communication with her fugitive son and coordinate his escape.
Following an intense manhunt, DCI detectives successfully tracked and arrested Amos Wambua in Kajiado. On Monday, July 20, 2026, the prime suspect made his first appearance before the Machakos Law Courts. The court ordered Wambua to be remanded in police custody to allow homicide detectives to finalize the forensic file.
The DCI Homicide Unit processed blood splatters and DNA evidence recovered from inside Wambua's house, and firmly established it as the primary ex*****on site. DNA swabs were also tied directly to the sexual assault of the minor.
Given the physical impossibility of a single individual seamlessly transporting four bodies across three kilometers of dense, inaccessible terrain without detection, the prosecution is heavily probing the direct involvement of accomplices.

Cyber-crime detectives successfully recovered communication logs from the mother's secretly registered SIM card. This metadata maped out the exact timeline of Wambua’s flight, proving premeditated accessory to murder after the fact.
Amos Wambua faces multiple counts of murder alongside charges of sexual assault, while his mother faces serious charges related to the concealment of evidence and aiding a fugitive. The state is expected to present its full forensic portfolio as formal trial dates are scheduled.
