The Secret of Life
A father used to tell his kids when they were little:
âWhen each of you turns twelve, Iâll share the secret of life.â
One day, when the oldest finally turned twelve, he nervously asked his dad, âSo whatâs the secret?â
His father leaned in and said, âIâll tell you, but you canât share it with your brothers yet. Ready? Here it is: Cows donât give milk.â
âWhat do you mean?â the boy asked, confused.
âYou heard me. A cow doesnât just give you milkâyou have to earn it. You have to get up at 4 a.m., walk through the barnyard, step in manure, tie the cowâs tail, secure her legs, sit on the stool, put the bucket underneath⌠and do the work yourself. Thatâs the secret: cows donât give milk. You either milk herâor you go without.â
The father paused and continued:
âSee, thereâs a whole generation that thinks cows give milk. That things just come to them automatically, for free. Their mindset is, I want, I ask, I get. Theyâre used to getting whatever they want the easy way. But thatâs not how life works. Life isnât about wishing, asking, and receiving. Itâs about effort. What you get in life comes directly from the work you put in. Happiness is the result of effort. And when you skip the effort, all youâre left with is disappointment.â
So he told his kids:
âRemember this secret from a young age, so you donât grow up thinking the government, your parents, or your smile is going to hand you everything you need. Life doesnât work that way.
Never forget: cows donât give milk. To get itâyouâve got to do the work.â
