Most Kenyan households remain under financial strain despite minor economic gains, a new Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) survey has revealed.

The poll shows that many families feel worse off than when President William Ruto assumed office, with daily survival remaining the biggest concern.

Unemployment, rising prices and poverty continue to dominate public anxiety, outweighing political or security issues.

According to TIFA, small improvements have not translated into meaningful relief for ordinary Kenyans.

The findings highlight a fragile lived economy, deep rural-urban disparities and continued reliance on basic energy sources, signalling that economic recovery is yet to reach many households nationwide.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers has threatened industrial action after accusing the Teachers Service Commission of failing to implement commitments made by President William Ruto to teachers.

Speaking in Naivasha, Secretary General Akelo Misori said key promises, including a shorter two-year CBA cycle, promotions for 25,000 teachers, and confirmation of intern teachers into permanent terms, remain unfulfilled.

KUPPET also cited delays in funding requests to Parliament and uncertainty over affordable housing units pledged to teachers.

The union warned that continued inaction could trigger nationwide unrest within the education sector.

Nairobi County has rolled out a six-month amnesty giving landlords a rare chance to regularize unauthorized developments without paying penalties.

Property owners are encouraged to submit available documents through NPDMS, sub-county offices, or City Hall to begin the approval process.

Planning officials will issue conditional approvals before granting full compliance certificates.

However, structures on public land, riparian areas, unsafe buildings, and properties under court orders are excluded.

The county says the initiative will strengthen planning compliance, reduce disputes, and limit demolitions as Nairobi pushes for orderly urban growth.

Truphena Muthoni has been awarded a full university scholarship by Mount Kenya University in recognition of her environmental advocacy.

The scholarship follows her 72-hour tree-hugging feat that drew national attention to climate action.

MKU officials confirmed the university will fully finance her studies and related needs.

Truphena said formal education will strengthen her conservation work and youth mentorship. She has planted over 11,000 trees and continues mobilizing communities.

Universities have been urged to urgently align their programs ahead of the transition of the first Competency-Based Education students to higher learning institutions in 2029.

Education CS Julius Ogamba said early preparation is critical to ensure universities can effectively accommodate learners trained under the new curriculum.

Speaking at Kisii University’s 14th graduation ceremony, Ogamba called for closer collaboration with the Commission for University Education and encouraged institutions to strengthen revenue generation for sustainability.

The ceremony saw 4,018 students graduate, including the university’s first cohort of medical doctors, signalling steady growth in specialized training and healthcare education.
