Till When?

They shot a man in daylight.
Not a thief.
Not a rebel.
Not a threat.
Just a mask vendor
A dreamer with dust on his shoes
and hope in his hands.

They slapped him first.
Laughed.
Broke him with the butt of a gun
then put a bullet in his skull
as if breath was a burden
and black life was a joke.

And we watched.
We always watch.
From behind phone screens and trembling hands
screaming inside our bones
but bleeding in silence.
The ground didn’t ask for blood today
but the government fed it anyway.

Till when?
Till when will mothers bury breadwinners?
Till when will bullets answer hunger?
Till when will our streets be crime scenes
and uniforms be gang colors?
Till when will justice rot in reports,
signed off with shrugging shoulders and "further investigations"?

They say “one bad apple”
but the whole orchard reeks.
Ojwang didn’t die he was murdered.
The hawker didn’t collapse he was executed.
And your silence?
That’s complicity in uniform.

We’re tired of hashtags.
Tired of flowers by bloodstains.
Tired of ministers with clean hands
and red-stained feet.

We are not numbers.
We are not stray dogs.
We are sons and daughters
with names, with dreams,
with hearts that still break
even when they’ve learned not to hope.

So tell me…
Till when, Kenya?
Till when will the government break us, bury us, burn us
and call it keeping peace?

Eternal Echoes

Today, as the Pwani University community gathers for a special candle lighting, we pause to honor and remember our beloved comrades whom we have lost in this first phase of the year. Their presence is deeply missed, and their memories will forever remain in our hearts.

Pwani University Students Media offers a solemn tribute to these bright souls who were part of our family. May their legacies inspire us, and may we find solace in the bonds of our community during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and all who knew and loved them.
As candles flicker against the fading light, we bid you a sorrowful 'fare thee well,' knowing your legacy will forever illuminate our path.

In April 2022 Daniel Muthami Mang'enda successfully sat for his KCSE examination at Katuala High School, Kitui County.
With admission number BB01/PU/41764/22, he joined Pwani University in August 2022, securing a chance to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option).

Daniel completed his third year and had begun his attachment in Kilifi County. According to his close associates, Daniel developed a medical condition (chest complications) towards the end of the last academic year and was later diagnosed with Severe Anaemia. He had to cut short his attachment and was transferred back to Kitui, where he later succumbed at Kitui Referral Hospital.

His close associates remember him as a vibrant and friendly personality who will be greatly missed. Daniel will be laid to rest on June 18th in his rural home, Kyangunga Location, Central Mulango Ward, Kitui County.

As Pwani University, we are greatly troubled by the increasing number of comrades we have lost in recent times. These moments of grief remind us of the fragility of life and the strength we must draw from one another. We stand in solidarity with all the departed souls, remembering them with love and praying for their eternal rest.We turn to God for strength and comfort in this painful season. As the Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Daniel’s family, friends, and all who knew him. May you find peace and healing in the memories you shared and in the love that surrounds you.
May Daniel’s soul, and the souls of all our departed comrades, rest in eternal peace.
AMEN

Hey Mr. Principal,
Kindly — I won’t be coming back to school on Monday.
I searched for green pastures but found none.
Truthfully, I was ready to eat my last supper
When they ambushed me.

My only mistake?
Writing.
Not on the whiteboard,
But on the colourless screen.

They said they just wanted a conversation.
But their vehicle roared like it ran on jet fuel.
From Migori, it flew —
Straight to the central police station.
A strange place for such gentle dialogue.

They claim I nodded in guilt,
That I bowed my head
Hit the wall
Until sleep took me.

But no — worry not.
I’ll still report to duty.
Not as the jovial Alberto you knew,
But in silence.

Not at my staffroom desk,
But six feet beneath it.

My only crime was typing.
Dear keyboard,
It’s okay.
