Donholm is one of the oldest estate in the Eastlands area, of Nairobi. Established around 1900, the name comes from a colonial plantation owner James Kerr Watson (3 Oct 1881 – 11 Nov 1955), who gave the name "Doonholm" after a place in Scotland to his 4600 acre dairy farm there.
Watson introduced the Ayshire cows in Kenya. He was also the first farmer to build a cattle dip to treat his animals from tick infestation.He built Donholm Road , a track in his farm to deliver milk to the City.(Donholm Road is currently Jogoo Road).
Initially the estate spread from City Stadium to its current location. 1940 Watson sold a 1/3 of the farm to a Polish national to settle some of his debts + to deal with the 1939-40 drought impacts. In 1950 government bought part of the land to build Embakasi Airport (now JKIA).
In 1960 govt bought more land for Lunga Lunga and Donholm Rds. 1966, William Malu, Machakos MP, bought huge chunks of it. Currently it hosts Harambee Sacco, Phase 5, Old Donholm, New Donholm + Phase 8. It has turned into a high-density suburb, hosting the lower middle-income.

As the year 2019 marks 400 years since the commencement of the transatlantic slave trade, Ghanaian artist Kwame Akoto-Bamfo has been sculpting hundreds of faces to represent the men and women who fell victim to slavery.Akoto-Bamfo has placed the sculptures in Ada Foah, which was a major slave market in the 19th century when the region was under British rule.

Akoto-Bamfo says he has borrowed from the ancient Akan tradition of creating portraits of the dead.

Akoto-Bamfo’s aim is to keep Ada Foah’s history alive and start conversations about what happened here.

The sculpted portraits are the ‘enslaved African’ section of the Nkyinkyim (pronounced Cheen – Cheem) installation, a broader take on Ghanaian history.

He said he used to choose his models in the past to portray specific expressions and traits. But now he prefers to use random models so as to sculpt faces from all over Africa because people from all over the continent were enslaved.

Akoto-Bamfo said the installation is evolving and will continue to grow and expand across continents. He’s added more sculptures over the last month.

The project began in 2010. Today he is working on several new pieces for museums in Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama in the United States. One of his pieces already stands in the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Alabama.

Akoto-Bamfo believes the best way to remember the ancestors is to respect their descendants.
