Koko Networks has shut down operations in Kenya, leaving hundreds of thousands of customers uncertain and at least 700 employees facing job losses.
On January 31, clients received mass text messages informing them of the closure: “Samahani KOKO customer, we regret to inform you KOKO is closing operations today. We will share the next steps soon. Asante for being a part of this journey.”
The closure follows a dispute with the Kenyan government over authorisation to sell carbon credits in international markets, a core part of Koko’s business model.
The shutdown affects not only direct employees but also thousands indirectly employed through the business.
Koko fuel, priced from as low as KSh 30 per refill, had become essential for many low-income households, reducing reliance on charcoal, lowering indoor pollution, and supporting forest conservation.
The company sold stoves and fuel at subsidised rates, using carbon credit revenue to expand clean fuel access and promote affordable, eco-friendly cooking alternatives across Kenya.
