Turkana County has recorded a sharp rise in new HIV infections, with 469 cases reported in 2025 — a 63 percent increase compared to last year.
Health officials say young people aged between 15 and 24 account for 33 percent of the new infections, raising concern about vulnerability among the youth.
At the same time, HIV-related deaths have climbed to 562, while more than 16,900 people are currently living with the virus in the county.
Despite the worrying trend, there is some progress. Mother-to-child transmission has significantly reduced, dropping from 16.9 percent to 9.7 percent.
Health authorities, working alongside partners such as the Kenya Red Cross Society, are now intensifying efforts to strengthen prevention, testing, and treatment services across Turkana.
