Traveling with your parents changes the way you plan everything.⤵️

My recent trip with my mom taught me this.

It’s not about rushing anymore. It’s about comfort. It’s about ease. And making sure she feels safe every step of the way.

Originally, our plan was to take the train from Rome to the cruise port in Civitavecchia for our …

It’s about an hour away, and while it works for many travelers… dragging luggage through train stations and figuring out transfers with my mom just didn’t feel like the best way to start the trip.

So I booked our transfers with instead.

They picked us up at our hotel, handled the luggage, and drove us straight to the port — easy, comfortable, and completely stress-free.

And honestly? It turned out to be the best decision.

The day we boarded the ship it was pouring rain. A friend of mine who was on the same cruise (traveling with her mom) took the train like we had originally planned. When they arrived at the station they spent nearly 45 minutes trying to find a taxi, Uber, or bus to the port.

When I heard what was happening, I called our driver and asked if he could go back to the station and pick them up. He did — and completely saved the day.

That’s when I realized how valuable it is to have transportation you can rely on, especially when you’re traveling with parents.

Easy. Convenient. Reliable.

And sometimes… a total trip saver.

Want to fall in love with Sicily in one port day? Here’s how.⤵️

Sicily wasn’t just a port stop.

It felt like stepping into layers of history, myth, and Mediterranean magic all at once.

👋Hi, I’m Tara, before we jump in… ➡️FOLLOW along for travel tips and itineraries that help women travel smarter and thrive after 40.

We docked with in Messina, easy access for the small luxury yacht-like cruise ship.

Before racing off to Taormina, I made sure to soak in the cathedral square, the astronomical clock, and those sweeping Strait views. It’s completely underrated.

Then… Taormina.

✨Cliffside views.
✨Mount Etna in the distance.
✨Ancient ruins overlooking the sea.
✨Gelato breaks on Corso Umberto.

Here’s what I learned if your ship ports here:

✔️ See Piazza del Duomo in Messina (especially near noon)
✔️ Take a cab to Taormina — faster and worth it
✔️ Wander more than you plan
✔️ Eat the gelato
✔️ Don’t rush the Ancient Theatre

This is the kind of port that makes you fall in love with Sicily — not just visit it.

‼️PRO-TIP: Take a taxi for a quick 45 minute ride!

Save this for your Mediterranean cruise planning ✨
Comment “SICILY” if you’d add this stop to your bucket list.

I will cancel dinner plans without hesitation.
But cancel a flight? Absolutely not.

I don’t hate going places…
I just prefer places that require a passport and a boarding pass. ✈️

Tell me I’m not the only one who cancels plans at home but never cancels a flight.

Where are you mentally right now?

Here’s a port-by-port snapshot 📸 of this Italy and Croatia small ship cruise 🛥️ and why sailing with elevates the experience:

🇮🇹 Rome
• Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica
• Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon
• Spanish Steps and the Colosseum

✨Pro tip: With limited time and my mom’s first trip to Italy, a golf cart tour was the most efficient way to see the must see landmarks.

🇮🇹 Naples > Positano
• Amalfi Coast viewpoints
• Hand painted pottery and cliffside cafés
• Black rock beaches and colorful seaside homes

⚠️Off season tip December through March, many shops open around noon.

💁‍♀️If I only had a few hours to show someone the Amalfi Coast, this is where I’d take them.

🇮🇹 Messina and Taormina, Sicily
• World’s largest astronomical clock in Messina
• Mount Etna
• Ancient Greek Theatre with sweeping coastal views

🇭🇷 Dubrovnik
• Medieval city walls overlooking the Adriatic
• Rector’s Palace and Maritime Museum
• Jesuit Stairs for Game of Thrones fans

🇭🇷 Zadar
• Roman ruins and centuries old cathedrals
• Sea Organ and Sun Salutation at sunset
• Old town along the Dalmatian Coast

🇮🇹 Venice
• St. Mark’s Square and Basilica
• Gondola rides through quiet canals
• Artisan mask workshops
• Hidden bacari wine bars

🤫Try SUSO gelato!🍨 It’s my favorite in the world!

Why small ship cruising in the Mediterranean 🌊
• Fewer passengers
• Curated shore excursions
• Access to smaller ports
• More meaningful time in each destination

Safari photography taught me patience in a way no other trip ever has…⤵️

Africa truly changes how you see the world.

Hi, I’m Tara 👋
Before you go ➡️ hit FOLLOW for travel tips, hidden gems, and inspiration for women who are thriving, curious, and exploring life (and the world) after 40.

If you love travel photography, Africa belongs on your bucket list.

The light is softer.
The moments are unscripted.
And the experience teaches you to slow down and see instead of rushing for the shot.

A few things I learned on safari:
• Early mornings and golden hour matter more than camera settings
• Stillness can be just as powerful as action
• Sometimes the best photo is the one you almost miss
• Expect a LOT of sitting and searching, but trust me, it’s worth it

This wasn’t just about taking photos.

It was about witnessing moments I’ll never forget.

As someone who truly loves photography, it was more than I ever imagined.

One honest note: pack your patience.
We watched people get frustrated when:
• Animals took too long to appear
• A guide knew where the leopard was—but the leopard wasn’t ready yet

But here’s the thing… patience always paid off.
And if you want animals to appear on a schedule, the zoo is always an option 😉

Safari isn’t a performance—it’s a privilege.

Still dreaming about this winter sailing with on the Star Legend ❄️🚢

…and in just 13 days, I’m doing it all over again, this time on a new Winter in the Med itinerary, Carnival in Venice: Winter in Italy and Dalmatian Coast, that honestly feels like a travel dream come true.

Think:
✨ Rome
✨ The Amalfi Coast
✨ Venice during Carnival
✨ Sicily (a brand-new destination for me!)
✨ And my first-ever visit to Croatia—Dubrovnik & Zadar

Winter travel in the Mediterranean is one of my favorite ways to experience Europe: fewer crowds, slower days, and a totally different kind of magic.

And this sailing is extra special because I get to share it with my Mom, who’s joining me for her very first trip to Italy and Croatia 🥹🤍

So let’s talk:
👉 Do you think we’ll get lucky with winter weather and sneak in some hot tub time at sea?
👉 Would you spend winter cruising the Mediterranean?
👉 Where are you headed next?

Drop your answer below 👇 I’m reading every comment.

And if you’re craving travel that feels meaningful, empowering, and a little bit life-changing, welcome👋…
