How Kalonzo Missed a Golden Chance to Inherit Raila’s Political Base

When history books about Kenya’s political transitions are written, one chapter will undoubtedly focus on a missed dinner, the dinner that could have reshaped the Kalonzo's political future.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka recently revealed that he had been invited by the late Raila Amolo Odinga for a private dinner on the 10th of this month. It was not just a social call, it was a symbolic gesture from a man who had long valued and trusted Kalonzo as a political ally, confidant, and friend.

But Kalonzo turned down the invitation.

That dinner could have been the bridge,a chance for Raila to publicly or privately pass on the torch, to bless Kalonzo as the next face of reform politics in Kenya. It could have sealed a legacy transfer, from Raila the father of opposition politics, to Kalonzo the steady statesman ready to carry the dream forward.

In politics, opportunities don’t always announce themselves, sometimes they come as simple invitations. And sometimes, missing one dinner can cost you an entire nation.

How Kalonzo Musyoka Betrayed Raila Odinga at the Doorstep of State House

Let’s be honest, if there’s anyone who should never utter a word about being denied a chance to speak at Raila Odinga’s funeral, it’s Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka. Because history is stubborn and it remembers.

Back in 2007, Kenya stood at a crossroads. The winds of change were strong. Raila Odinga had mobilized the nation behind a movement that was unstoppable, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). From the lakeside to the highlands, from Nairobi to the Coast, Kenya was ready for transformation. Raila was a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Kalonzo went further. He refused to stand with Raila in defending the people’s will and instead stood with Mwai Kibaki, whose disputed win plunged the country into chaos. While Raila’s supporters were being tear-gassed in the streets, Kalonzo was smiling beside Kibaki, taking oath as Vice President in a government born out of electoral injustice.

Raila’s victory was stolen not just at the ballot, but through betrayal by one of his own.

And today, Kalonzo’s allies dare to complain that he was denied a chance to speak at Raila’s funeral? The irony writes itself. Because long before anyone denied him a microphone, Kalonzo denied Raila a presidency.

Wiper supporters should calm down and stop politicizing matters of national protocol.

During the late President Mwai Kibaki’s State Funeral, Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka who was not just a running mate, but the sitting Vice President of the Republic of Kenya at the time, did not address the nation. It wasn’t because he was disrespected, but because a State Funeral follows a strict national order of precedence and an established protocol that has nothing to do with personal feelings or political entitlement.

Fast-forward to During the Raila Odinga Farewell, and some feel that Kalonzo should have automatically been given the microphone at Baba’s State Funeral simply because he was a running mate. Let’s be honest state functions are not campaign rallies. They are solemn national occasions guided by the Office of the President and the National Protocol Office.

Respect, in such a setting, is not measured by who speaks but by how we honor the departed. Kalonzo’s presence alone was a show of respect ,and that’s what truly matters.

Let’s not turn national mourning into political noise.

Today at Uhuru Park, truth spoke louder than hired applause.Despite Governor Wavinya Ndeti ferrying thousands of people from Machakos to fill the park, the crowd refused to clap when her name was called, there was only silence, THIS wasn’t accidental. It was a collective vote of no confidence,a powerful message from the same people she thought she could fool.

That moment exposed everything, the end of political deception and stage-managed popularity. No amount of taxpayer money can buy genuine love from the people you’ve betrayed.

In Machakos, hospitals are bleeding, patients are dying for lack of drugs, yet the governor is busy burning millions to impress party bosses. While children sleep hungry and medics go unpaid, the county’s wealth is rebranded as mobilization.

And now, as if to mock the people further,2027 campaign posters are already printed.
What kind of fear drives a leader to start campaigning two years early?
Only a guilty conscience and a shaky throne built on corruption and intimidation.

Let’s call it what it is, Wavinya is WANTAM
