RADA TV KENYA UPDATES: IRATE FEMALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DEMAND GOVERNMENT ACTION AS LECTURERS’ STRIKE ENTERS SECOND MONTH, SAY THEIR FUTURE IS IN JEOPARDY

Irate female university students across Kenya have voiced anger and growing despair over the prolonged lecturers’ strike that has now entered its second month, paralyzing learning in public universities and throwing the country’s higher education system into crisis.

The students say the ongoing industrial action, stemming from the government’s failure to fully pay lecturers’ salaries and allowances, has left their academic lives hanging in uncertainty. Many expressed frustration that the Ministry of Education and the government at large have remained silent even as their futures hang in the balance.

During a gathering at Machakos University, hundreds of female students condemned the state’s slow response to the crisis, urging President William Ruto and Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to intervene immediately and restore normalcy in learning institutions.

Machakos University Student President Ashley Chepkoech led the calls for action, warning that the continued disruption could have long-term consequences for the youth and the nation.

“We feel abandoned and betrayed. The government must respect the academic calendar and ensure lecturers are paid what they are owed. Our future should not be a bargaining chip in political or financial disputes,” she said.

The students also accused police officers of brutality during recent demonstrations held in Nairobi by learners from the University of Nairobi (UoN) and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Several students were reportedly injured as officers dispersed protests calling for an end to the strike.

JKUAT Vice President Christine Maina castigated the Ministry of Education for what she termed “total disregard for students’ voices.”

“We protested peacefully outside Jogoo House, but instead of dialogue, we were met with violence and silence. It’s clear the Ministry no longer values the concerns of young people,” she said.

In a show of solidarity, students from private universities have joined their counterparts in demanding swift action. Africa Nazarene University Student President Mulinge Alice said education should never be sidelined in national priorities.

“The government must uphold the sanctity of education. Investing in education is investing in Kenya’s future. It’s shameful that billions can be spent on entertainment, political programs, and sports while our classrooms remain empty,” she remarked.

The students particularly criticized the government for what they described as “misplaced priorities,” pointing to the recent Nyita Program launch and the millions of shillings awarded to the Harambee Stars football team while the education sector remains in turmoil.

Anne Kemunto, a student leader from Egerton University, urged lecturers not to yield to pressure to accept the government’s proposal to pay the KSh 7.9 billion salary arrears in installments.

“We stand with our lecturers. They have families and responsibilities too. The government should pay them in full — not in bits. Accepting installments will only prolong this crisis,” she said.

Students also spoke of the emotional and financial toll the strike has taken on their families. Maggie Elizabeth, a student at Machakos University, said her parents are deeply worried and losing hope.

“Our parents are mentally distressed. They sacrificed everything to educate us, but now they feel helpless because our future is uncertain. Many of us are supposed to graduate this year or begin industrial attachments, but all our plans are shattered,” she lamented.

With lectures suspended indefinitely, the students now fear that the academic year could be lost entirely if the stalemate continues. They warned that continued inaction could spark countrywide student protests and unrest.

The irate learners are demanding immediate government intervention, full payment of lecturers’ dues, and restoration of learning in all public universities. They have vowed to keep raising their voices until the crisis is resolved.

“Education is not a privilege — it’s a right. We will not sit back and watch our dreams fade away,” the students declared in unison, as the country’s higher learning institutions remain silent and deserted.

RADA TV KENYA UPDATES: MACHAKOS DEPUTY GOVERNOR H. E Hon Francis Mwangangi DEMANDS CLARIFICATION FROM PRESIDENT William Samoei Ruto OVER HIS RECENT REMARKS, "KUNA WATU WALIKUWA WANANILETEA KISIRANI NA MAANDAMANO NA SUFURIA KWA KICHWA NA WAMEENDA"

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has demanded that President William Ruto come out clearly to explain his recent remarks that "KUNA WATU WALIKUWA WANANILETEA KISIRANI NA MAANDAMANO NA SUFURIA KWA KICHWA NA WAMEENDA" , a statement made after the passing of ODM Leader Raila Odinga.

Addressing the media, DG wangangi said many Kenyans initially believed that the President was genuinely mourning Raila’s death, but the new remarks have raised eyebrows and left the public questioning their true meaning. According to Mwangangi, the President’s statement appeared vague and insensitive, given the timing, and could easily be interpreted as a veiled message directed at someone specific.

The Deputy Governor further stated that such comments from the Head of State risk sending the wrong signal to a grieving nation and could undermine efforts to foster peace and unity.

“We want the President to come out and tell Kenyans exactly what he meant because we all know the one who led political protests in this country was Raila Odinga,” Mwangangi said.

He added that the statement by President Ruto was even more concerning than the earlier controversial remarks made by the Governor of Nyeri, urging the President to exercise caution and empathy in his public utterances, especially during a period of national mourning.

DG Mwangangi reminded Kenyans that Kalonzo Musyoka is the only leader fit to steer the country to a fruitful direction, urging Kenyans to support Kalonzo Musyoka's Presidential Bid, come 2027.

RADA TV KENYA UPDATES: PS TERESIA MBAIKA HOLDS STRATEGIC MEETING WITH JAMBOJET MD ON ENHANCING LOW-COST AIRLINE OPERATIONS AND MARKET EXPANSION IN KENYA

The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Aviation and Aerospace, PS Teresia Mbaika-CBS , today held a high-level consultative meeting with Jambojet Managing Director, Mr. Karanja Ndegwa, at her office. The courtesy call centered on strengthening collaboration between government and industry players in driving growth and competitiveness within Kenya’s aviation sector.

The discussion focused on the role of low-cost carriers in supporting Kenya’s economy, particularly through enhanced connectivity, trade facilitation, and tourism development. The two leaders exchanged insights on the current airline regulatory environment, compliance with aviation safety and security standards, and emerging opportunities for route expansion to destinations experiencing growing passenger demand.

PS Mbaika underscored the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for low-cost airline operations, noting that affordable air travel continues to play a critical role in boosting economic inclusion and regional integration. She emphasized the need for joint investment in infrastructure development, including modernized airport facilities and efficient ground-handling services, to support the growth of budget airlines.

The PS further urged airlines to embrace innovation and technology to enhance operational efficiency and improve the overall passenger experience. “For our aviation sector to remain globally competitive, we must adopt smart systems and innovative service models that enhance reliability, affordability, and customer satisfaction,” she said.

Commending Jambojet for its consistent performance and expansion, PS Mbaika lauded the airline’s commitment to maintaining high operational standards while extending its network to underserved routes across Kenya and the region. “Jambojet’s success story is a testament to how strategic growth and responsive business models can drive national economic transformation through trade and tourism,” she added.

On his part, Mr. Ndegwa expressed appreciation to the government for its continued support and policy reforms that have strengthened the aviation ecosystem. He noted that the favorable regulatory environment has allowed airlines like Jambojet to thrive, foster competition, and provide more Kenyans with affordable travel options.

Jambojet, a subsidiary of Kenya Airways, is Kenya’s pioneer low-cost airline and operates from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi. The carrier continues to play a pivotal role in connecting key domestic and regional destinations, reinforcing Kenya’s position as a hub for affordable and efficient air travel in East Africa.

RADA TV KENYA UPDATES: COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF MACHAKOS DISMISSES SAMMY KIOKO’S CLAIMS OF NON-PAYMENT AS BASELESS AND POLITICALLY MOTIVATED

The County Government of Machakos has strongly refuted claims made by Sammy Kioko alleging that the County is indebted to him for goods purportedly supplied, terming the allegations as “false, malicious, and politically motivated.”

In a media release issued by the Department of Finance, Economic Planning, and Revenue Management, the County clarified that following a thorough verification of all procurement and payment records, there is no evidence of any contractual, procurement, or supply relationship between Sammy Kioko and the County Government. The statement further notes that there exists no record of a Local Purchase Order (LPO), delivery note, invoice, or any contractual instrument to substantiate his claims.

The County Government emphasized that all procurement processes strictly adhere to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015, and the Public Finance Management Act, 2012, which demand rigorous compliance and documentation. It underscored that all legitimate suppliers are registered within the County’s supplier register and are formally engaged through proper documentation — a procedure absent in Mr. Kioko’s case.

The statement, signed by Hon. Catherine Mutanu, CECM for Finance, Economic Planning and Revenue Management, described the allegations as part of a “calculated and politically motivated scheme” targeting Her Excellency Governor Wavinya Ndeti and the integrity of the County’s leadership. It condemned what it termed as “reckless allegations made without evidentiary backing,” saying they amount to defamation and public mischief, intended to mislead the public and erode trust in the County’s governance.

“The timing, tone, and medium of dissemination point to a deliberate attempt to politically malign the office and person of Her Excellency the Governor,” the release stated, warning that spreading falsehoods to advance political propaganda is unethical and unlawful.

Hon. Mutanu reaffirmed that Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s administration remains committed to the rule of law, fiscal prudence, transparency, and accountability, and will not be derailed by politically engineered distractions. She assured Machakos residents that the County Government will continue focusing on service delivery and development anchored on integrity and proper governance structures.

The County concluded by urging the public to disregard the false claims and remain confident in the County’s leadership and commitment to upholding established legal and ethical frameworks.
