DPP Seeks to Deny Bond for Police Constable in Murder Case
NAIROBI, KENYA – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is opposing the release on bond of Police Constable Klinzy Barasa Masinde, 32, who is charged with the murder of Bonface Kariuki.
Appearing before Justice Kanyi Kimondo, the prosecution argued that Masinde, a serving police officer, poses a significant risk due to his authority, access to fi****ms, and ability to influence witnesses, including fellow officers who reportedly saw the shooting. They also cited his technical knowledge and access to sensitive information as potential tools for witness intimidation.
The DPP further contended that Masinde is a flight risk and that his release could spark public unrest and endanger his own safety, given the public outrage surrounding the incident. Releasing him, they argued, could also undermine public confidence in the justice system, particularly amid ongoing concerns about police accountability.
Masinde has pleaded not guilty to the charge and has been declared mentally fit to stand trial. Justice Kimondo has directed Masinde to file a formal bond application within seven days, with the DPP given an equal period to respond.
