Backlash Forces Government to Suspend New Hardship Area Classification

The government has suspended the implementation of its newly revised hardship area classifications following a nationwide uproar from teachers, civil servants, and political leaders.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku confirmed that the Ministry of Public Service and the Ministry of Education reached a consensus to put the rollout on hold. The move aims to allow for further consultations with elected leaders and other key stakeholders before any changes are effected.

The now-paused report had faced sharp criticism for removing several traditionally marginalised regions from the hardship list, raising fears among public servants that their allowances and working conditions could deteriorate. Teachers from Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, West Pokot, and parts of the Coast and North Eastern counties were particularly vocal, arguing that the new classification failed to reflect the realities on the ground.

CS Ruku, speaking during a visit to Samburu County, assured public workers that their hardship allowances remain intact and that no deductions would occur while the review is under reconsideration. He stressed the need for inclusive dialogue to ensure fairness in the final outcome.

Lawmakers and union leaders have criticised the report for downplaying the harsh conditions faced in remote regions. In Samburu, concerns were raised over the downgrading of the county’s hardship level, with leaders pointing to continued insecurity, poor infrastructure, and limited access to essential services.

The suspension opens the door for a broader evaluation and a possible reclassification that accurately captures the socioeconomic and environmental challenges in Kenya’s underserved areas.

Kajiado West: Government Launches KSh 700 Million Projects, Kindiki Warns Against Political Incitement

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned political leaders against inciting division and unrest for political gain, terming such actions unpatriotic and irresponsible. He was speaking during an economic empowerment event held in Olooltepes, Kajiado West Constituency.

Kindiki stated that peace, security and stability are key foundations for socio-economic development and must be protected. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to delivering equitable development across the country under the Kenya Kwanza administration.

In Kajiado County, 14 markets are currently under construction as part of a nationwide market infrastructure programme aimed at supporting local trade. Additionally, electricity connectivity projects valued at over KSh 700 million are being implemented to connect 4,000 new households across the county. Kajiado West Constituency has been allocated KSh 125 million for the connection of additional households to the national grid.

The event brought together several national leaders, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot. Local leaders, including Kajiado West MP George Sunkuiya and Woman Representative Leah Sankaire, were also present.

The leaders reviewed ongoing national government projects and engaged with local women and youth groups on economic empowerment initiatives.

Octopizzo Endorses George Ruto’s Passion for Matatu Culture, Urges Kenyans to Separate Art from Politics

Kenyan rapper Octopizzo has thrown his support behind George Ruto, son of President William Ruto, following the unveiling of George’s custom matatu dubbed Mood. The artist praised George’s passion for matatu culture while urging Kenyans not to confuse appreciation for urban art with support for the political establishment.

In a statement shared by The Kenya Times on July 19, 2025, Octopizzo said:

“While individuals like George Ruto support and appreciate matatu culture, this doesn’t automatically mean the culture endorses the political regime. The enemy is not George; the enemy is bad governance and a harmful government. Let’s put aside feelings a little and celebrate the culture.”

The rapper further called for the recognition of matatu culture as a national celebration, proposing that June 25th be marked with events that highlight the vibrancy of the sector. He added:

“Now, I want June 25th to be celebrated with that matatu event, followed by my track ‘Noma Ni’.”

Octopizzo’s remarks came just hours after Mood was launched in a vibrant, rain-soaked event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where thousands of youth turned up to witness George Ruto’s latest project.

Highest Paid Teacher to Earn Ksh 167,000 Under New Salary Deal

Teachers in Kenya will see their pay rise after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) signed a new 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The agreement, finalised on July 18, 2025, will see the lowest paid teacher earn a basic salary of Ksh 28,620, up from Ksh 23,000, while the highest paid teacher will take home Ksh 167,415.

KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori said classroom teachers will now receive a fairer share, with those in the lowest grade enjoying a 29.6% raise, and those in higher positions a 5% increase. Misori noted that previous CBAs favoured principals and department heads, while this deal focuses on ordinary teachers.

On allowances, the commuter allowance remains unchanged, ranging from Ksh 4,000 to Ksh 16,000 depending on grade. However, the agreement includes the phasing out of the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) by June 30, 2026. The guidelines had been criticised for affecting teachers’ promotions and job security.

The new pay deal will be implemented from July 30, 2025, until June 30, 2029.

The signing ceremony at Eka Hotel, Nairobi, was attended by KUPPET officials and TSC Acting CEO Eveleen Jesang Mitei.
