𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟖: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭’𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The church in Corinth was influenced by a worldview that questioned or denied the resurrection of the dead. Paul responds by making the resurrection of Christ the foundation of the gospel and the Christian hope. He reminds them that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised according to the Scriptures. He also points to numerous eyewitnesses who saw the risen Christ.
Paul then shows the seriousness of denying the resurrection. 𝑰𝒇 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒅, 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒚, 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒆, 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒐 𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒆. But Paul triumphantly declares: "But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead."
The resurrection therefore is not a minor doctrine. It is the foundation of our salvation, our hope, our future resurrection, and our victory over death.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟖 - 𝟑 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬: (𝐿𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠)

𝟏. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥 (𝑆𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑦)
— Paul begins by reminding the Corinthians of the gospel he preached: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised according to the Scriptures. This gospel was received, believed, and became the foundation upon which they stood.

— “[Christ’s] resurrection is such a vital part of the gospel message that denying it contradicts one’s faith in Christ.” The first 11 verses can be summarized as “𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑒, 𝑤𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑑, 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑑.” Yet there are apparently in his audience those who profess to believe in Christ, and yet deny the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:12).

— Paul then outlines how a denial of Christ’s resurrection completely dismantles the Christian faith – “If there is no resurrection,… (1 Cor. 15:13-18).

— We must keep the resurrection at the center of our preaching, teaching, witnessing, and personal testimony. A dead Savior cannot save, but a risen Savior can.

𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:

𝟐. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 (𝑇𝑢𝑒𝑠𝑑𝑎𝑦)
— While there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus of Nazareth existed and was crucified by the Romans, many fail to realize the “infallible proofs” (Ac. 1:3) of the of the resurrection.

• 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛

— Paul goes on to explain that the resurrection is a bodily one (1 Cor. 15:35-38, 49; Phil. 3:20, 21). This is a perplexity to many Christians who are taught that we all become formless spirits in the afterlife. The erroneous teaching of the immortality of the soul destroys the Biblical teaching of the resurrection of the saints.

— “Paul does not relate the term ‘spiritual’ to an immaterial existence…. We will have real bodies, but they will not wear down or decay…. [T]hat is what we are promised in Jesus.” The resurrection of Jesus is that those of us who have accepted
the plan of salvation – from Adam to the end of the world – if we die, we will live again. (1 Cor. 15:20-23).

𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑤𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑦. 𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑤𝑒 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑠𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑤, 𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠, 𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑠, 𝑤𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.

𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 (𝑊𝑒𝑑𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑑𝑎𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑇ℎ𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑑𝑎𝑦)
— Paul declares that Christ is the "first fruits" of those who have fallen asleep. Because Christ has been raised, those who have died in Christ will also be raised at His coming. The resurrection of Jesus is therefore God's promise concerning our future.

— Death may separate families temporarily, but it does not have the final word. The grave may receive our loved ones, but the grave cannot keep those who belong to Christ forever.

— Paul reaches the climax of his teaching with the glorious promise that at Christ's return, "the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." Death appears powerful now, but it is only temporary. At the Second Coming, the dead
in Christ will be raised and the living transformed.

𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧:
How many echo Mary's despairing cry, “They have taken away the Lord, ... and we know not where they have laid Him”!... “Go quickly, and tell His disciples that He is risen.” Bid them look not to Joseph's new tomb, that was closed with a great stone, and sealed with the Roman seal. Christ is not there…. Jesus lives, and because He lives, we shall live also…. Grasp this hope, and it will hold the soul like a sure, tried anchor. Believe, and thou shalt see the glory of God.

10 Talking Points to the SS Lesson 8: The Power of Christ’s Resurrection

1. The last lesson established that without love, all spiritual gifts, knowledge, and sacrifices are meaningless. In this week’s lesson, we pivot to the foundational pillar that guarantees love’s ultimate triumph: the literal, physical resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Cor.15). Love gives our faith its character, but the resurrection gives our faith its endurance and certainty.

2. To dismantle the skepticism among some in Corinth who claimed there was no physical resurrection (1 Cor. 15:12), Paul named a vast group of living witnesses who saw the resurrected Jesus. Paul showed the Corinthians that Christ’s bodily resurrection was a historical fact, not a myth. Why is the cross alone incomplete without the empty tomb? What would daily life look like if our faith ended at Calvary?

3. Paul uses the following logical argument: if Christ did not rise from the dead, then gospel preaching is empty, faith is futile, believers remain trapped in their sins, dead Christians have perished forever, and Christians are the most pitiable people on Earth. The resurrection is not an optional doctrine; it is the cornerstone of the Christian faith (1 Cor. 15:17-18).

4. Paul uses the Old Testament agricultural metaphor of the “first fruits” to demonstrate his point. Under the Sanctuary service, the first sheaf brought to the priest guaranteed that the full harvest was coming (Lev. 23:10). Jesus’ resurrection is the first sheaf of humanity’s harvest, pledging that all who belong to Him will likewise be raised to life at His return (1 Cor.15: 20).

5. In 1 Cor. 15:21–28 and 45–49, Paul contrasts Adam and Christ. The “first Adam” represented humanity in disobedience, bringing sin, mortality, and physical decay. The “Last Adam” (Christ) submitted fully to God, bringing righteousness, life, and ultimate restoration. Through Adam we inherit a mortal image; through Christ we bear a heavenly image.

6. Addressing how the dead are raised, Paul uses three analogies: a seed buried to become a plant, different kinds of animal bodies, and celestial versus terrestrial glory. The resurrected body maintains identity and character yet undergoes a miraculous transformation from corruptible to incorruptible, dishonour to glory, and weakness to power (1 Cor. 15: 42-43).

7. The power of Christ’s resurrection is not merely a future hope for the end-times; it is a present reality in the life of every believer. Through spiritual rebirth and baptism, believers are buried with Him and raised to walk in “newness of life” (Rom. 6:4, Col. 2:12). This resurrection power enables us to overcome sin, endure trials, and die daily to self.

8. Paul presents a triumphant climax in 1 Cor. 15:54–57. Death, the ultimate enemy that strips humanity of dignity and life, is swallowed up in victory. Because Christ absorbed the sting of sin (which is death), the believer can mock death’s power and look forward to the Last Trumpet when mortality puts on immortality.

9. Because resurrection victory is assured, our sacrifice, gospel labour, and persistence are never in vain. A secure future in Christ translates into unmovable commitment in the present. Can the assurance of Christ’s victory over the grave change how we grieve the loss of loved ones who sleep in Jesus?

10. Christ’s resurrection is a historical, foundational, and transformative reality that guarantees our future bodily resurrection and gives meaning to present Christian living. Lesson 9 (Love-Driven Ministry) to be done next week, transitions into 2 Cor, where Paul demonstrates how the victory of the resurrection and the love of Christ become the compelling motive for gospel service, reconciliation, and ministry amidst hardship.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟔: 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: When we compare the church to the human body, we can learn many things. The body has many different parts. In the same way, the church has many different members. Every member does different things to help the church work. Every member has different spiritual gifts, too. These gifts help the church work together in peace and love. The peace and love in the church show the peace and love that are in God’s heart.
This week, we will look at 1 Corinthians 12–14 and its teaching about spiritual gifts. These chapters are part of a bigger set of chapters about correct Christian behavior in the church (1 Corinthians 11–14). Paul talks about the problem with meetings that are out of control. His answer to this problem is spiritual gifts. The gifts help the church “become strong” (Ephesians 4:12). In short, God gave the church different gifts to help unite it. Now Paul adds to this idea with his teachings about the gifts. Our becoming one in Jesus and with the Spirit is the only way to help us avoid separation in the church.

𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬
— The core message of this lesson is that spiritual diversity is a divine strategy for church unity. True unity does not mean uniformity. The Apostle Paul highlights how the three Persons of the Godhead work together to distribute and empower different abilities among believers:

“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts,
especially that you may prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:1, ESV).

This week we will survey 1 Corinthians 12–14 and its teaching
on spiritual gifts. This section is part of a slightly larger unit, where
Paul deals with the expected Christian behavior in religious settings
(1 Corinthians 11–14). Paul’s primary concern has to do with the
problem of disorderly gatherings. His answer to this problem is that the
church is a body whose parts have different functions that contribute
to “the edifying of the body of Christ” (Eph. 4:12, NKJV). In short,
God gave the church spiritual gifts in order to promote unity through
diversity.
Certainly, Paul still has in mind the factionalism problem addressed
in the first four chapters of 1 Corinthians, where the answer to the
lack of agreement among church members is unity in Christ. Now, he
develops that idea by presenting his understanding of the role of spiri-
tual gifts. According to Paul, unity in Christ and the Spirit is the only
means of avoiding schisms

The Uganda government has responded to concerns raised by the Seventh-day Adventist Church over the monthly National Cleaning Day, with Prime Minister Robin Anabanja stating that the government is considering the matter and may grant amnesty to Sabbath-keeping members.

According to a report from UBC, Kampala, the Prime Minister confirmed that President Yoweri Museveni had directed the government to address the petition submitted by the Adventist Church. The directive came after church leaders highlighted the conflict between the National Cleaning Day, scheduled for the last Saturday of every month, and the observance of the Seventh-day Sabbath.

"We can give them an amnesty because of their religion, but they also need to participate either on Saturday or Sunday," Prime Minister Anabanja said, referencing the President's directive. She added that she would meet with church leadership to determine an alternative day for Adventist participation.

The Prime Minister also clarified that the government's curfew restrictions would remain in place, limiting movement until 10:00 AM on the cleaning day. She explained that the curfew was necessary to ensure the success of the national exercise.

"If we say let the Adventists be the ones to travel to go to church, even everybody will go, and so they will have to respect that. They remain in their homes, and then move at 10 to their church," she stated.

The announcement follows an earlier statement from the Uganda Union Mission, which had urged members to remain calm and prayerful as church leadership engaged the government in pursuit of a mutually acceptable solution. The Union also issued temporary guidance for worship services, adjusting the start time to 10:30 AM while negotiations continued.
