Only two Kenyans will represent the country at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from September 11 to 13, 2026. Dorcus Ewoi will compete in the women’s 1500m, while Mercy Adongo Oketch will line up in the 400m. Tough qualification standards have left many Kenyan athletes out.

Beatrice Murugi is a former Kenyan professional marathon runner and athlete whose heartbreaking transition from elite international sports to abject poverty has recently sparked widespread concern and calls for government intervention in Kenya.

Originally discovered by a village elder in Nyahururu, Murugi moved to Japan in 2009. She completed her high school education there and officially turned professional in 2012. During her peak athletic career, her winnings allowed her to completely transform her family's standard of living. She bought land in Nyahururu, constructed a home for her mother, and entirely funded her siblings' education

Her financial fortunes shifted drastically due to a series of compounding personal and financial tragedies.

Seeking an alternative income stream, Murugi invested a major portion of her career earnings into a commercial lorry. The vehicle was involved in a fatal road accident near Delmonte. Because the vehicle's insurance had expired—a lapse her driver failed to communicate—she received zero compensation and was legally forced to shoulder the heavy medical and liability expenses for the injured victims.

In 2021, Murugi developed a severe, chronic stomach-bloating condition. The illness remains unresolved despite medication and has heavily restricted her physical capacity to train or do heavy manual labor.
When she fell seriously ill, her husband reportedly evicted her and their child from their home into a rental, leaving her to face her medical and financial struggles entirely alone.

Today, Murugi lives in a tiny KSh 1,000-a-month rental room in Kerugoya, where she picks tea and takes on grueling casual manual labor jobs just to provide food for her 10-year-old child. Her plight has triggered heavy public outcry on social media, with sports enthusiasts urging Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports to step in, support her medical treatment, and rescue her from poverty.
