Children’s voices are rivers.
Too often dammed, diverted, or silenced.
But in 2024, Mtoto News helped those rivers break their banks, flooding classrooms, summits, research halls, and policy rooms with courage, clarity, and change.

Sauti Zetu was the drumbeat training children across Nairobi, Kisumu, and Homabay in advocacy, storytelling, and digital safety. Girls in Kasarani, some young mothers, have become guardians of online spaces, protecting not only themselves but their peers.

Climate Action found it's roots and wings. From climate clubs in schools to children-created card games, dictionaries, and digital tools, learning became action. At the Kisumu Kids Climate Summit, 200 children planted trees not as symbols, but as living promises of accountability.

Podcasts & Media gave children new microphones. whereby:
1. Mission Accomplished inspired with real-life success stories.
2. B4 18 spotlighted young changemakers.
3. Tea with Kayla and My Teenage Mind opened safe spaces for honesty on self-esteem, choices, and mental health.

Through these platforms, children were not guests on the airwaves; they were the hosts of their own narratives.

Research became child-led.
It’s A FACT engaged children as researchers in Kenya, Malawi, and Mali, informing the AU Model Law on Child Online Safety.
Studies on Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and child sexual violence ensured children’s testimonies shaped frameworks for justice.

In online grooming consultations, children validated findings themselves, reminding us that protection must be co-designed with those most at risk.

Policy Consultations placed children in decision-making circles. From AU roundtables to UNICEF convenings, they didn’t just sit at the table; they influenced what was written on it.

And the impact?
1 million+ children reached in 2024.
20+ partnerships UNICEF, Save the Children Kenya & Madagascar, TikTok, , GIZ Kenya, World Vision Kenya , Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, Terre des Hommes Netherlands in Africa, and more.

A new Strategic Plan 2024–2028 (PLAYES Framework) to keep children visible, safe, and central in every conversation.

In a powerful moment at the Learners Ed-Tech Summit, Sam Smith, President of the Kenya Children's Assembly, delivered a vital message. He emphasized the need for us to work closely with children and be their champions as they lead the way in finding solutions for the future.

He thanked everyone for not giving up on the mission to make children seen, heard, and engaged, highlighting that their active participation is non-negotiable. Sam also brought up the vital topic of budgeting, underscoring that for children to truly be at the center of innovation, their needs must be reflected in financial planning and resource allocation.

In a powerful address, CPA Carren Ageng'o, PS - Children Services, shared a resounding message, "Our children are no longer waiting for dreams, they have already done it, and they need more support to continue finding solutions." 💡 This summit serves as a platform to assess our progress in innovation and engaging children.

She highlighted that with children making up 46% of the population, they are incredibly valued. She gave a firm promise that children with disabilities would not be left behind, ensuring an inclusive and equitable future.

In a crucial point on child safety, she asked the kids if they knew about the help line, 116. She explained its importance as a tool for protection against dangers like floods and cyberbullying. The speech also addressed the digital divide, assuring that the government is working to supply digital tools like computers and internet to children, especially in rural areas.

To empower the next generation, teachers are being trained to use these digital tools effectively. The PS also noted the holistic approach to child welfare, highlighting that $3 billion is allocated to a food program for children. This comprehensive vision ensures that education is supported by both technology and essential services.
