We need two things NOW:

1️⃣ Schools: Open emergency exits & remove window grills.
2️⃣ Ministry of Education: Strict, routine safety audits. No excuses.

A profound silence has fallen over the nation as we awaken to the heartbreaking news from Utumishi Girls Academy. Sixteen young lives, full of promise and dreams, were tragically cut short in a fire that broke out in their dormitory in the dead of the night.

The weight of this loss is immeasurable, leaving families, friends, and the entire school community in deep mourning. We stand in solidarity with those whose hearts are shattered, holding close the memory of the students whose voices have been silenced too soon.

This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that every learning environment is a sanctuary of absolute safety for our children. No student should ever have to fear for their life while pursuing their education. We must demand and implement stronger, more rigorous safety standards across all institutions to prevent such a catastrophe from ever happening again.

As the multi-agency teams, including the Ministry of Education and Kenya Red Cross, continue their work on the ground, we urge the community to support one another and utilize the support desk established for assistance.

May the families find strength in this dark hour, and may the souls of these young angels rest in eternal peace.
