Children are growing up in a world shaped by media, technology and digital communication. The best way to prepare them? Give them the skills to understand it, question it, create with it and use it to make their voices heard.

That’s what Sauti Zetu Digital Literacy Training is all about.

Over Days 1 & 2, children explored:
🎥 Media & emerging trends
🔎 Misinformation & fake news
🔐 Online safety & digital wellbeing
🎤 Communication, interviews & storytelling
📢 Using media for advocacy

And this is just the beginning!

Over five days, they’ll move from media literacy → advocacy → photography & videography → hands-on field production, ending with a showcase and graduation.

📸 With Canon supporting the practical camera training, children will also get hands-on experience using real Canon cameras.

Because children shouldn’t just be consumers of media.

They should be creators, storytellers, advocates and voices shaping the world around them. 🌍

🎥 Children are coming to the forefront of media!

Mtoto News has partnered with Nation Media Group and Nation Media Foundation to create new opportunities for children to participate in mainstream media.

At the heart of this partnership is a new children’s bulletin, where children will take on roles as anchors, reporters and storytellers.

Four days. One exhibition. And so many young minds ready to shape the future.

Over the last four days, Mtoto News and Kutunga have been at the Young Scientists Kenya 9th Science & Technology Exhibition, under the theme “Shaping Kenya’s AI Future Using STEM.”

Walk up to our booth and you’d find a little bit of everything: a child flipping through Shajara Little Ones, a teenager discovering Shajara Teens magazine, young people curious about our shows and podcasts, and the Toto on Podcast corner buzzing with conversations.

But the best part? The microphones were in the hands of children. 🎙️

They interviewed fellow young innovators about the ideas they had created, the problems they were solving and how technology was helping them bring those ideas to life.

And in between all the conversations, we met children who were curious about AI, child rights, storytelling, podcasts and so much more. Some even had one simple message for us:

“I like what you do. I want to be part of Mtoto News.”

Four days at YSK reminded us of something important: children aren't just preparing for Kenya's AI future they're already exploring it, understanding it and imagining how it can work for them and their communities.

And honestly? We can't wait to see what they build next.

Most research about children is designed by adults, answered by children, and authored by adults.

Mtoto News is launching CHILD, the Children Hacking and Innovation Lab of Design. It is a research centre by children.

In CHILD, children choose what gets researched. Children are trained in research design, ethics, data collection and analysis. Children run the fieldwork. Children decide what the finding is. Children publish under their own names and present at conferences themselves.

Adults facilitate, train, safeguard and administer. Adults do not author.

The Children's Research Panel opens from age four, with methods matched to age. Our youngest researchers work through play, drawing, mapping and sorting. Our oldest lead study design and analysis and mentor the younger tiers.

We are inviting funders, research institutions, conference organisers and governments to join the first cycle.

Children understand their world. They should be the ones researching it.

Children are players, not spectators.

"In my area, plastic waste is barely recycled." – Child participant ♻️

That's the reality many children in Kibera face every day.

At the AI & Maths Literacy Hackathon at the SHOFCO Kibera School for Girls, children are using AI, maths, and their lived experiences to tackle local WASH challenges.

After identifying key issues on Day 1, today they're designing, testing, and refining solutions with real feedback turning ideas into action.

Because the people closest to a problem are often the ones with the best solutions. 💡
