In a room full of hope and courage, children spoke not just as students, but as experts of their own lives.

At the “What We See, What We Want” panel, led by Portia Wanjiru, they shared truths that adults often overlook: no culture, faith, or tradition should ever harm a child.

They spoke of schools and families as spaces where their voices must be heard, rooted in the reality of what they live every day. Shanon, a student from a rural school, spoke of violence against children, a stark reminder that protection cannot wait.

Their call was clear: adults and governments must keep promises, enforce laws, and create safe spaces where children are seen, heard, and valued.

Children are not just the future, they are here now, and they demand to be listened to.

At today’s National Learning Convening on the Prevention and Response to Harmful Practices, leaders, advocates, and frontline workers reflected on progress, gaps, and the road ahead for child protection in Kenya.

MP Millie Odhiambo highlighted how evolving cultural practices and social media are shaping young people’s experiences, emphasizing the urgent need for alternatives to harmful rites of passage and spaces that center children’s rights.

PS Caren Angengo outlined steps to operationalize Kenya’s legal frameworks: distributing child protection services to counties and sub-counties, strengthening police child protection units, and expanding child-friendly courts. Despite progress, enforcement remains uneven, data gaps persist, and cultural resistance continues to challenge prevention efforts.
