Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has strongly criticized the opposition leaders, accusing them of destabilizing the country through what he termed as “empty rhetoric” and incitement.

Speaking during an economic empowerment forum at Olooltepes in Kajiado West Constituency, Kindiki said Kenya cannot afford to be held hostage by divisive politics and violence.

“We must stop violence, tribalism, and chaos for the country to move forward. The progress of this nation can only be realized through unity and focused development," said Kindiki.

The DP blamed the recent destruction of property and loss of life on opposition led protests, which he described as politically motivated and detrimental to national cohesion.

Kindiki urged Kenyans to reject leaders who sow seeds of hate, emphasizing that the Kenya Kwanza administration is committed to lifting the lives of ordinary citizens through its ambitious development agenda.

Meru deputy governor nominee Linda Gakii Kiome has vowed to make Gender Based Violence (GBV) prevention a central focus of her leadership.

She said she will make it a priority not just for women, but also for male victims who often suffer in silence.

Ms Kiome made the bold statement today during her vetting session at the Meru County Assembly, following her appointment by Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia after the impeachment of former Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Her vetting followed a High Court ruling ordering the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to gazette a returning officer for Meru County for the purpose of clearing Ms Kiome for the deputy governor's position.

Meru Faces Alarming Gender-Based Violence Problem

A recent study by the county government of Meru indicates high rates of GBV, with hitting/battering scoring 88 percent and killings of GBV victims at 34.9 percent, placing Meru among the counties with the highest cases in the country.

Farmers in the region have been challenged to adopt climate-smart agriculture, water conservation, soil health, and sustainable farming technologies to beat the adverse effects of climate change on food systems.

More than 2,000 farmers from Meru Isiolo, and Laikipia counties gathered in Ngare Ndare for a hands-on agricultural expo organized by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and partners.

The farmers expo was intended to equip farmers with real, actionable solutions to boost crop yields, adapt to climate change, and protect natural resources.

The event brought together farmers, agricultural experts, and development partners in a collaborative effort to transform rural livelihoods through sustainable practices.

Lewa Chief Programmes and Partnerships Officer (CPPO) John Kinoti said the Expo was inspired by the fact that most farmers rely heavily on rain-fed agriculture and face increasing threats from climate change, soil degradation, and limited market access.

The Meru County Assembly has called on the Meru Water and Sewerage Services (MEWAS) to urgently address operational inefficiencies, improve revenue collection, and promote inclusivity within its workforce.

This comes after the assembly adopted a report from the Select Committee on Public Accounts and Investments, chaired by Kithinji Ethaiba, which scrutinized the Auditor General's report on MEWASS financial statements for the year ending June 30, 2023.

The committee expressed concern over the mounting debt owed by MEWASS clients, urging the firm to overhaul its debt management strategies.

Key recommendations include enforcing payment plans, penalizing defaulters, and utilizing automated SMS, email, and phone reminders to alert customers about due payments.

“The institution must improve debt management by applying penalties, monitoring compliance, and using digital alerts to notify customers of payments due—before or after disconnection,” Ethaiba said while tabling the report.
